News about the upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy show isn’t positive, suggesting it may not move forward as planned.
Variety has reported that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy won’t be back for a third season, making the upcoming season its final one.
William Shatner, famous for playing Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek, has expressed his disappointment and sadness about the show’s cancellation.
Star Trek isn’t limited to just our world; it lives in the realm of science fiction, filled with strange, exciting possibilities for exploration and what humans can achieve.
Shatner explained on Twitter that the desire to reach for something beyond ourselves – to strive for perfection and understand our limits – has been a fundamental part of the human experience since the beginning of time, and continues to drive us in every way – physically, intellectually, and ethically.
What I’ve always loved about Star Trek is its ability to imagine things that don’t exist yet, brought to life by incredibly talented writers and designers, while also exploring timeless and fundamental human experiences – both the joys and the struggles.

Given the enduring appeal of its core themes, I believe Star Trek has a bright future. I’m a big fan and would be very happy to see the franchise continue, so I was disappointed to learn about the cancellation of the latest series.
A new series based on Star Trek debuted on Paramount+ in 2023. The first two episodes of the 10-episode season were released in January.
The show was picked up for a second season even before the first season had finished airing, and filming on that first season just wrapped up recently.
CBS Studios and Paramount+ have announced the cancellation of ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,’ stating they are very proud of the hard work, dedication, and innovative spirit that went into creating the show.
The show featured a fresh set of characters alongside returning favorites, and it broadened the scope of the ‘Star Trek’ universe with thrilling new stories.
We want to thank Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and everyone involved in making this series. They truly honored Gene Roddenberry’s original ideas with their creative storytelling. We’re excited to release the second and final season soon, and we’ll continue to appreciate the hard work and dedication of the entire team.
While a specific date isn’t set, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season two is currently expected to premiere in early 2027, based on how the streaming service has released similar shows in the past.
