A live-action remake of Disney’s animated film Moana, which came out in 2016, is planned for release in the summer of 2026 – just ten years after the original.
Dwayne Johnson will return as Maui in the upcoming live-action version of Moana, marking the first time a star has reprised their animated role in Disney’s live-action remakes. He’ll be joined by Catherine Laga’aia, who will play Moana.
John Tui and Frankie Adams play Moana’s parents, Chief Tui and Sina, while Rena Owen portrays Moana’s grandmother, Gramma Tala.
Disney has been making live-action versions of its classic animated films for years, starting with movies like The Jungle Book, The Lion King, and The Little Mermaid. However, Moana is unique because it’s the first time they’re turning a computer-animated (CGI) movie into a live-action film.

The new movie was written by Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush. Bush recently wrote and directed Zootopia 2 and also helped write the original Moana.
Thomas Kail is directing the film. He previously worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda on the 2020 filmed version of the hit Broadway show, Hamilton.

Alan Tudyk, who famously voiced the character Hei Hei, won’t be returning for this project. According to Screen Rant, another actor will be voicing the chicken instead.
Catherine Laga’ai was announced as the lead actress in 2024, before production started. Now, after two years, the first trailer has been released.
I just watched the new trailer and I’m really excited about Dwayne Johnson as Maui! It’s awesome to see him actually become the different animals like he does in the animated movie. The trailer showed off some beautiful shots of him as a bird and a whale, and they even have a totally new shark design which looks fantastic. As a fan of the original, it’s really cool to see those transformations brought to life!
