The new downloadable content “Obsidian Mirror” for Age of Mythology: Retold will be available on April 21st. It’s being released by Xbox Game Studios and developed by World’s Edge, Forgotten Empires, Tantalus Media, CaptureAge, and Virtuos.
Here is an overview of the expansion, via its Steam page:
From across the ocean comes a glorious new world pantheon.
As a huge fan of Age of Mythology, I was so excited to finally see the Aztecs added with the “Obsidian Mirror” expansion! It’s something the community has been asking for ages, and it really changes up the game. It’s not just adding a new civilization; it’s a whole new way to play, with gods, units, and mechanics we haven’t seen before. What I love most is how they’ve brought Aztec mythology to life – it’s all about sacrifice, illusions, and this really cool focus on the cycle of life and power. It feels epic, especially in the new campaign, which is driven by a really intense rivalry between the gods!
Choose from three powerful new Major Gods, each with a unique way to play. Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent, is a benevolent ruler who boosts his followers with wind magic, focusing on culture and knowledge. Tezcatlipoca, the Smoking Mirror, thrives in darkness and chaos, using sorcery to summon creatures from the underworld and manipulate illusions. Huitzilopochtli, the god of sun and war, requires sacrifices and unwavering faith, rewarding his devoted followers with immense power.
Grow your power in the game with nine new Minor Gods, all based on Aztec myths. Each god offers special abilities, unique units, and new strategies. You can command powerful figures like Itzpapalotl, a goddess of death and magic, or Tlaloc, who controls rain and destruction. Even Xolotl joins the fray, with the power to turn your enemies into terrifying monsters.
The “Obsidian Mirror” expansion brings new Fear and Illusion mechanics to the game, giving you more ways to control the battlefield. You can set traps, influence how enemies act, collect life energy, and build structures from defeated enemies. Central to the Aztec civilization is Tonalli, a life essence unleashed in combat. Every warrior who falls strengthens your divine Favor, empowering your gods and advancing your civilization. You can even sacrifice villagers to gain greater power when needed.
A thrilling new 12-mission campaign unfolds a grand tale of warring gods and the fight for survival. After the ancient rivalry between Quetzalcoatl and Tezcatlipoca leads to the destruction of the perfect city of Aztlan, Huitzilopochtli guides his people on a journey south to build a new empire. At the same time, Tezcatlipoca flees through a magical mirror, traveling the world to gather powerful allies and regain control. Expect epic battles between gods, broken promises, and a destiny for the Aztec people determined by courage, faith, and strength.
Obsidian Mirror is a major update to Age of Mythology: Retold. It brings a powerful new experience to fans eager to play as the Aztecs, and to strategy gamers who enjoy epic mythology and unique gameplay. This expansion reimagines the game’s divine battles with a fresh, intense approach.
You can now play Age of Mythology: Retold on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. It’s available through Steam and the Microsoft Store.
