After many seasons, the popular show Outlander is nearing its conclusion. As the eighth and final season begins and previously hidden truths are revealed, viewers are eagerly trying to predict how the story will end. Throughout its run, Outlander has walked a fine line with its fantastical elements – acknowledging them without fully embracing them. While often categorized as fantasy, the show has always relied more on symbolism, hints, and unexplained events. Now, as the series approaches its finale, it seems to be moving away from subtlety and becoming more direct with its fantastical side.
The third episode of the new season features a truly puzzling event: Claire unexpectedly revives a baby that was stillborn. This incredible moment sparks a conversation with Jamie, but it’s so unbelievable that everyone – including the viewers – realizes Claire is more than just someone who travels through time. She possesses a power beyond that.
Does Claire Have Powers?

The Outlander episode “Abies Fraseri” marks a significant shift in the show’s overall narrative. The story centers on the usual struggles of conflict, loss, and tough decisions. Adding to the drama, a woman arrives at the Fraser home in labor with twins and is already very ill. Claire, acting as the doctor, successfully delivers the first baby, but the second is born without a pulse. She attempts to revive the baby using medical procedures, like stimulation and helping it breathe, but is unable to succeed. It becomes clear that, medically, there’s nothing more she can do.
Understandably, the current situation reminds Claire of the painful loss of her first daughter, Faith, who was stillborn. As she holds the new baby and reflects on her past grief, a surprising thing happens: the baby unexpectedly begins to cry, showing signs of life.
The show strongly suggests Claire possesses supernatural abilities. She performed an act that defies scientific explanation, though the exact nature of her power – whether it’s magic, spiritual, or something else – remains a mystery. There are clear connections to Master Raymond, evidenced by a recurring blue light seen during key events like Faith’s birth and their interactions. Hints from the original book series suggest Raymond might be an ancestor of Claire, which could explain both her time travel and her unique abilities, like healing and seemingly bringing people back to life.
Caitríona Balfe discussed whether a recent scene hints at Claire developing supernatural abilities, given her past experiences with the mystical in Outlander. She told TVLine that she believes all of Claire’s seemingly unconnected moments – like touching skulls and having strong intuitions – are actually linked. Balfe points out that Claire has always had an otherworldly quality, starting in Season 1. This final season of Outlander is being shaped differently than previous ones, as there isn’t a final book to follow – similar to Game of Thrones. Because of this, the show has been carefully considering how much control Claire has over any developing powers, with detailed discussions happening behind the scenes.

As a fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about Claire’s role, and the showrunner, Matthew B. Roberts, has shed some light on it. He’s explained that Claire isn’t necessarily controlling the magic, but more like a channel for it – if you don’t understand something powerful, it can just flow through you. He’s keeping the full story unfolding throughout the season, and honestly, he wants us to think about what it all means. Is it magic, something bigger, or connected to the universe itself? He’s leaving that up to us to interpret, which I think is really cool!
Claire’s ability to revive someone dramatically changes her role in the story. Previously, her intelligence and experience were what made her stand out. Now, it suggests she might possess a unique power beyond just time travel. This moment was unexpected but satisfying, as it cleverly paid off a subtle hint from earlier in the series. For instance, in a recent conversation with Jamie, Claire asks about her hair color, referencing a specific scene from a previous season.
Season 4 Already Hinted at It Through the Cherokee Adawehi

In Season 4, the Outlander episode “Common Ground” strongly suggested that Claire possesses abilities she doesn’t fully realize.
This scene unfolds soon after the initial, relatively calm meeting between the Frasers and the Cherokee. While some tension remains, both groups are trying to live alongside each other. The Cherokee healer, Adawehi (played by Tantoo Cardinal), seeks out Claire. Before they can really talk, Adawehi shares that she’s known about Claire all along – she had a dream about her. Because Adawehi doesn’t speak English, her granddaughter-in-law, Giduhwa (Crystle Lightning), translates, and Adawehi begins to describe her vision.
The Cherokee healer saw Claire as someone with strong healing abilities, which at the time seemed to mean her medical skills. But the healer also said something that feels very different now: “When your hair is white like snow, you’ll have wisdom beyond time.” She also explained that death comes from the gods and that Claire shouldn’t feel responsible when people die. Back then, this felt like a comforting message to help Claire cope with losing patients. Now, it seems more like a warning that Claire’s relationship with life and death might be much deeper and more complicated than anyone realized.
Adawehi senses something special about Claire, something beyond what she’s lived or learned. Claire has always had unusual insights and a knack for making instinctive choices, and people used to think this was because she was from the future. But now, that explanation doesn’t seem to fully cover it, and Claire is beginning to feel that way too. This unfolding mystery feels connected to what Mrs. Graham told her way back in the show’s first episode.
