Before the animated series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, comes the official comic prequel, Star Wars: Shadow of Maul. Written by Benjamin Percy with art by Madibek Musabekov, this five-part comic series takes place between The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels. It introduces the gritty planet of Janix and its inhabitants, setting the stage for Maul’s arrival.
The first comic issue came out on March 4th, and we now know the release dates for the entire series. However, these dates clash with the premiere of Maul – Shadow Lord on Disney+, which is a significant issue. Four out of the five comic issues will be released at an inconvenient time.

The first issue of Shadow of Maul came out about a month before the Maul – Shadow Lord series starts streaming on Disney+ on April 6th. That doesn’t leave much time to read it before the show begins, unless you read quickly!

Things get a little tricky with the release dates. Issue 2 of the comic comes out on April 8th, just two days after the show premieres. Issues 3 and 4 are planned for May and June, with a fifth and final issue to follow. However, the entire 10-episode show Maul – Shadow Lord will finish airing on May 4th, meaning it will be completed before the comic book series concludes.
Viewers will experience the show without any prior knowledge of the complete story originally planned in the comics. This is particularly annoying for dedicated fans, as prequel comics often have inconsistent and unpredictable release dates.
Star Wars: Shadow of Maul Is More Important Than Fans Think
You might be wondering why the release date matters so much. But it does! The creators, Percy and Musabekov, worked closely with Lucasfilm while making Shadow of Maul, using scripts and episodes from the animated series as they built it.
I’m really excited about this new comic! It throws you into this incredible, vibrant underworld – all lit up with neon – that the Empire doesn’t even know about. It centers around Captain Brander Lawson and his trusty droid, Two Boots, as they try to make their way through all the shady dealings and criminal connections. It’s a fantastic setup!
Captain Lawson and Two Boots, played by Wagner Moura and Richard Ayoade respectively, will be important characters in the Maul – Shadow Lord comic. This comic introduces the main characters, so reading it first can enhance your understanding. While you can still enjoy Maul – Shadow Lord without reading it beforehand, the way it’s being released is still a bit confusing.
What To Expect From Maul – Shadow Lord
Based on everything we’ve seen of Maul – Shadow Lord and the released trailers, this new animated Star Wars show promises to be one of the most beautiful yet. Creator Dave Filoni, who has developed the character of Maul in The Clone Wars and Rebels, says the animation style is bolder and more artistic than anything Lucasfilm Animation has done before. And the trailers confirm it – the show looks stunning.
This Star Wars story feels fresh and stands apart from other shows in the franchise. Instead of focusing on Jedi battles, it centers on Maul directly confronting the Empire. He’s attempting to build a criminal empire from the ground up on a remote planet, with a small, devoted team. He also has his sights set on a promising Padawan who could be crucial to his plans.
Devon Izara is a Twi’lek Jedi Padawan whose future was stolen by Order 66, and is voiced by Gideon Adlon. She has a unique connection with Maul: he’s a former Sith without a master, and she’s a Jedi without an Order. Their relationship is almost the opposite of the one between Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano in The Clone Wars. It will be compelling to see if Devon ultimately chooses to fight alongside Maul.
The series features two new Zabrak brothers, Scorn and Icarus, who bring more conflict to the story. With a compelling plot, engaging characters, and a fascinating protagonist, Maul – Shadow Lord appears to have everything needed to be a hit. Despite some issues with how Lucasfilm handled Star Wars: Shadow of Maul, Maul – Shadow Lord promises to be an entertaining experience.
