Despite the excitement around returning Marvel characters like Jessica Jones, a standout in the Daredevil: Born Again series is Matthew Lillard’s character, Mr. Charles. He’s a surprisingly impactful presence despite never being directly involved in any physical conflict, and Vanessa Fisk quickly suspects he’s not who he claims to be. So, who is Mr. Charles, and does he come from the Marvel comics? What we do know is that he appears to have a connection to the MCU’s new Avengers team. (Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for Season 1, Episode 1 of Daredevil: Born Again.)
As a movie fan, I’m really intrigued by Lillard’s new character. He’s not a mysterious villain, but someone fascinating – a guy who doesn’t seem to care about the usual respect given to Kingpin, and who clearly has enough power that Wilson Fisk actually acknowledges it, maybe even fears what he stands for. The first episode reveals a lot: this Mr. Charles is always eating, he’s a CIA operative, basically a problem-solver, and he’s powerful enough to go up against Fisk without facing immediate consequences. What’s really unsettling is how casually he orders people to their deaths and then handles the aftermath. He describes himself as a logistics guy, and that feels… accurate. It’s also interesting how the MCU continues to show parts of the American government as potentially the real villains here.
Who is Mr. Charles & How Is He Connected to the New Avengers?
A quick scene reveals that Mr. Charles reports directly to Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Val). When Kingpin faces trouble with the governor, Val intervenes and resolves the issue, seemingly at Mr. Charles’ request. We already knew Val, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, was a CIA director, and despite facing potential removal from her position at the end of Thunderbolts, her unveiling of the New Avengers ensured she kept her job. This suggests Mr. Charles and the New Avengers are essentially extensions of the same organization, and Val hasn’t changed her ways – she’s still operating outside the law.
Val’s control over the CIA and her continued work on the mysterious Sentry program with OXE reinforce the MCU’s trend of depicting the US government as a threat to its heroes. Previously, General Ross and the HYDRA-influenced Senator Stern filled this role, but now Val seems to be the government’s main antagonist. However, given that the CIA collaborates with criminals like Kingpin, framing her as simply a corrupt individual feels like an understatement.
There’s no clear precedent for Mr. Charles within Marvel Comics history. Notable CIA figures are rare in Marvel, and outright corrupt officials are even rarer – though Mr. Charles might claim he’s exempt from the rules. While characters like Rosten and Trenton Sanders tried to discredit Silver Sable, they aren’t significant enough to have inspired him. Therefore, Mr. Charles appears to be a completely original character, and a compelling one at that.
