Following the many relationships on Grey’s Anatomy—the popular medical drama currently in its 22nd season—is even more complicated than learning a difficult surgical procedure like a Whipple procedure.

Since choosing Derek Shepherd (the late Patrick Dempsey!), the show’s main character has been romantically involved with seven different people.

The show’s creators apparently decided fans hadn’t suffered enough with Denny Duquette’s death (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan), and recently brought back the familiar storyline of a doctor falling for a patient with a terminal illness, just to upset viewers again.

Away from her role on Grey Sloan, Ellen Pompeo has been happily married to music producer Chris Ivery since 2007. The couple, who both originally lived in Boston, first met at a grocery store in Los Angeles.

Like Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson – who plays Miranda Bailey on Grey’s Anatomy – also found lasting love decades ago. The mother of three – Sarina, 32, Joylin, 27, and Michael, 20 – revealed in a 2007 interview with Parade that she’d been with her partner for 19 years.

However, some of the other actors on the show have only recently found romantic partners and are enjoying escaping reality with them.

Caterina Scorsone and E.R. Fightmaster, who played a couple on TV, were seen holding hands in Los Angeles on March 23rd. On the show, Fightmaster’s character ended their relationship with Scorsone’s to take a job in London, but in real life, the two appear to be a couple. This sighting happened three years after their characters’ breakup on screen.

Apparently, record producer Chris Ivery is the one who asked Ellen Pompeo, the star of Grey’s Anatomy, to give him a chance after they met at a grocery store in Los Angeles in 2003.

The actress, best known for playing Meredith Grey since 2005, explained that she was with a friend they both know, during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022.

After briefly chatting with a fellow Bostonian, he started calling me repeatedly, and I ignored him. He accused me of being rude for not returning his calls, and I told him it was because I wasn’t interested in dating him. He then responded, seemingly offended, asking why I would even think he wanted to date me, since we didn’t even know each other.

She explained that they usually start with an argument. As she put it, ‘If you want to get my attention, a little disagreement is a good place to start.’

After four years of marriage, they had their first daughter, Stella, in 2009. Sienna joined the family in 2014, followed by their son, Christopher, in 2016.

Pompeo described their success as a surprising turn of events. Speaking on Alex Cooper’s Call Her Daddy podcast in 2025, he said they felt like two kids who unexpectedly found themselves in Hollywood and caught up in a whirlwind experience.
