‘Lord of the Rings’ Sequel From Stephen Colbert Happening, Plot Details Revealed

Get ready to return to Middle-earth! Warner Bros. has announced a new Lord of the Rings sequel is being developed. Director Peter Jackson, known for the original Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit films, shared the news on X (formerly Twitter). The new movie, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, is in its early stages, and Stephen Colbert – the host of Late Night, a comedian, and a big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien – is writing the screenplay.

Peter Jackson, still heavily involved with the future of Lord of the Rings, started the announcement with an update on Andy Serkis’ upcoming movie, The Hunt for Gollum. Jackson confirmed the film, which bridges the gap between Bilbo’s birthday and Frodo’s departure in The Fellowship of the Ring – a period of 17 years – is scheduled to be released in 2027, and then shared…

Andy’s work is fantastic, and the project is shaping up beautifully. The script is developing nicely, and I’m confident we’re going to make a great film.

Okay, so Peter Jackson just dropped a huge bomb – he’s got a partner for the new Lord of the Rings sequel, and it’s Stephen Colbert! Now, this isn’t some random casting choice. Colbert’s a massive Tolkien fan, and actually, he and Jackson go way back. Remember that little cameo he did in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug back in 2013? Well, it seems that went well enough to land him a spot on this new project. Colbert himself said…

I really love both your books and films. What I kept coming back to, though, were the first six chapters of ‘The Fellowship of the Ring’ – specifically from ‘Three is Company’ through ‘Fog on the Barrow-Downs’ – that weren’t included in the first movie. I started thinking those chapters could stand alone as their own story, but still connect to the larger narrative. I wondered if we could create something that stayed true to both the original books and the films you’d already made.

Colbert explained the origin of The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, starting with sharing the concept with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee, before approaching Jackson. For the last two years, they’ve been working on the script with Philippa Boyens, who also wrote The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and King Kong. They’ve also released a brief summary of the story.

Fourteen years after Frodo’s death, Sam, Merry, and Pippin revisit the places where their original journey started. At the same time, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers an old secret and begins investigating why the War of the Ring almost ended in defeat before it truly began.
