Since the first season of Small Prophets finished with a “To be continued” message, viewers have been eagerly awaiting updates about whether the show will return.
I just heard from Mackenzie Crook, who created and stars in the show, and he’s given us a really exciting update! He’s not only told us what to expect soon, but also hinted at how long the series might run for – it’s great news for fans like me!
I’m really hoping we get a second season! I heard the creator, Crook, talking about it, and he’s thinking eight episodes would be perfect to wrap everything up. He hasn’t started writing it yet, so the details are still up in the air, but he envisions the first four episodes ending on a cliffhanger – a ‘to be continued’ moment – and then the final four episodes would bring everything to a satisfying conclusion. Sounds amazing, right? He really wants to leave it at that, a complete story. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
Crook also mentioned that while the first season took a decade to create, the second season won’t take nearly as long.

He explained that most of the last decade was spent discovering what this journey actually entailed. Now that he understands it, he’s ready to complete it.
I’m really thrilled about how things are unfolding, and I’m eager to see what happens next – I get to shape the story! It feels like a big responsibility. While I hoped people would like it, I didn’t expect such a strong and immediate connection. The incredibly positive response means I really need to deliver and not disappoint anyone.
Crook hinted that they’re still deciding if Michael will follow through with his plan to move to Canada, as suggested at the end of last season, or stay put. He did confirm, though, that the homunculi, who died in season one, will need to reappear, meaning Michael will have to repeat the experiment that brought them into existence.

Although the BBC hasn’t confirmed a second season of Small Prophets yet, the show got off to a strong start, becoming the network’s most popular new scripted series this year. The first episode drew 7.7 million viewers within 28 days of its release.
This would suggest that a renewal can only be a matter of time.
Small Prophets is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
