It was clear from the start, when the first John Wick movie came out in 2014, that the story had a lot of room to grow – and it definitely has.
The John Wick universe has expanded beyond the original films with three sequels, a spin-off movie starring Ana de Armas, and a TV series focused on the world’s Continental hotels. An anime prequel is also currently in development.
We just got a big update on a new project in the series! Donnie Yen, the famous Hong Kong action star, will be returning as Caine, the blind assassin he played in the fourth film.

Deadline reports that filming for the project will start next month. Rina Sawayama, who is also a singer, will return as Akira, and it seems her character will have a major conflict with Caine.
The final scene of John Wick: Chapter 4 hinted at a future conflict. Akira, seeking revenge for her father’s death at the hands of Caine, confronted him with a knife in Paris, suggesting an exciting showdown is to come.
As announced last April, Yen will star in and direct the new film. The script is written by Mattson Tomlin, and Chad Stahelski, who directed the original John Wick movies, is a producer.
You know, when I heard Yen talking about this project, he really highlighted what fascinated him about working with Caine – this incredible contrast he brings to the role. And he sees this film as a chance to really shake things up and evolve the action genre, which, as a film fan, is incredibly exciting to hear!
And he’s not holding back when he comes to his aspirations for the project.
He aims to make the ultimate martial arts action movie – something that captures the excitement of films like John Wick, but also offers a fresh, emotionally resonant story and a unique visual style.
I’m thrilled to both direct and star in this project. I want to use everything I’ve learned from my years making action movies to create something fresh and exciting.
Although we don’t have an official summary yet, the movie will likely center around the ongoing conflict between Caine and Akira, which began in the previous film. We’ll share more information as soon as it’s available.
