Fast Travel Games and Starbreeze Entertainment have announced a new VR game set in the world of Payday. Called Payday: Aces High, it will be a cooperative experience for up to four players, focusing on completing challenging heists. A trailer showcasing the game is available below, and it’s scheduled for release on SteamVR and the Meta Store later this year.
I just watched the trailer, and it looks like the gameplay will take us through a bunch of different missions. We’re going to be able to play as four characters – they’re calling them the Aces! There’s the Ace of Clubs, who’s all about stealth – basically a ghost. Then you’ve got the Ace of Diamonds, the tech expert. If you like going in strong, the Ace of Spades is your guy – he’s the enforcer. And finally, the Ace of Hearts is the mastermind, planning everything out. It’s Payday, so you know it’s going to be a mix of trying to be sneaky and then, inevitably, things going loud with tons of guards coming after you! It looks like a blast.
In Payday: Aces High, the Aces crew is on a mission to get even with Warren Jupiter, a powerful businessman who previously set them up. Players will have a wide variety of weapons – like pistols, SMGs, shotguns, and assault rifles – and gadgets, including grappling hooks and sentry guns, to help them plan and execute heists however they choose. The game centers around their quest for revenge, letting players approach each job with the tools and strategy they prefer.
Fast Travel Games has long been impressed with how the Payday series allows players to experience over-the-top crime scenarios like those seen in Hollywood movies, taking direct control of the heists. This year, they’re taking things even further with Payday: Aces High, a new VR game where up to four players can team up and fully immerse themselves in the action, according to co-founder and chief creative officer Erik Odeldahl.
According to Starbreeze Entertainment CEO Adolf Kristjansson, the Payday franchise has over 50 million players globally. They’ve partnered with Fast Travel Games, a leading VR studio with over ten years of experience, to bring Payday to virtual reality. Their new game, Aces High, expands the Payday universe, letting players team up and experience immersive heists. Kristjansson emphasizes that Aces High isn’t simply a port of the existing game; it’s a completely new Payday title designed specifically for VR.
Starbreeze, the company behind Payday 3, has been struggling to improve the game and recently had to lay off employees, suggesting those efforts aren’t going as planned. They also announced in October that Payday 3 won’t have an offline mode. Fortunately, the original Payday 2 is doing well, as another team, Sidetrack Games, is now in charge of its development.
