Warner Bros. is developing a new Lord of the Rings film that will explore an unexpected storyline. Following the events of The Hunt for Gollum, this movie, titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, will be written by Stephen Colbert, his son Peter McGee, and longtime franchise writer Philippa Boyens. While a director hasn’t been chosen yet, the story’s basic plot is already established.
The upcoming movie is set 14 years after the events of Return of the King. It follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they remember their adventures during the War of the Ring. The story also features Sam’s daughter, Elanor, who discovers a hidden secret connected to the war. This discovery will allow the film to flashback to the time period of The Fellowship of the Ring.
The new plan involves incorporating chapters 3 through 8 of the book, sections that were left out of the 2001 film. The story will likely be told from the Hobbits’ perspective, and if the original actors return, they might use technology to make them look younger. This approach will finally allow Tom Bombadil to appear in a Lord of the Rings movie.
LOTR: Shadow Of The Past Cannot Cut Tom Bombadil From The Story

Colbert believes some removed scenes should be restored. These scenes were cut to make the films more focused, as they didn’t significantly advance the main story. While they’re enjoyable and add to the world, they weren’t considered essential to the plot (though opinions on that decision differ). These scenes follow the Hobbits’ journey from the Shire, including help from Elves and their travels through the Old Forest.
During their journey, some of the companions are trapped by a dangerous tree called Old Man Willow. Luckily, a mysterious man wearing a blue coat and yellow boots saves them by singing the Hobbits free. They then return to Tom’s home, where they meet his wife, Goldberry, enjoy wonderful meals, and listen to fascinating stories about the history of Middle-earth.
As a huge Lord of the Rings fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Tom Bombadil. He’s easily the most mysterious character in the whole story, and honestly, incredibly powerful too. When the hobbits stay at his house, you get the sense he’s been around forever – he even calls himself ‘the Eldest’! What’s really mind-blowing is that the One Ring has absolutely no effect on him; he can see right through Frodo even when he’s wearing it. It’s a bit strange, though – Tolkien actually wrote Tom Bombadil way before he finished the books, so he feels a little different in tone than the rest of Middle-earth. He’s less a character and more like the spirit of nature itself, which is just so cool.
The decision to leave him out of Peter Jackson’s films sparked a lot of debate, and people still discuss it today. Some felt his character wasn’t essential to the story, but others argued he brought valuable depth and realism to Middle-earth, offering a compelling contrast to the clear-cut battle between good and evil. He also added a welcome touch of levity, particularly in the earlier parts of the story, while simultaneously hinting at a sense of loss and the decline of the natural world.
Now that the new Lord of the Rings film is revisiting previously excluded story elements, including Tom Bombadil feels essential – it’s a primary reason to revisit those chapters at all. The film could also finally show the Barrow-wights, another significant omission from the original movies, and even include the character Fatty Bolger. However, Tom Bombadil is the most important addition. While he appeared in the Rings of Power series, this would give him a proper cinematic debut after being left out of the films 25 years ago. There are understandable concerns about adapting these stories, but at least seeing Tom Bombadil on screen would be a definite plus.
Okay, so I just heard that The Hunt for Gollum is officially hitting theaters on December 17th, 2027! Super excited about that one. As for Shadows of the Past, unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when that’ll be released – we’re still waiting on a date.
