Duffy confirmed to share her story with “honesty and courage” in new documentary film

Disney+ has announced a new documentary that will tell the story of Duffy, promising to be both truthful and brave in its approach.

Duffy is an award-winning singer – she’s won a Grammy, a BRIT, and an Ivor Novello award. She first became famous in 2008 with her incredibly successful album, Rockferry, especially thanks to the hit song “Mercy.” People noticed her for her distinctive music and fashion sense, which often reminded them of the 1960s.

She followed up with another album, Endlessly, in 2010, and then largely stepped away from public life for ten years.

In 2020, the Welsh singer shared a deeply upsetting story on social media, detailing how she was drugged and kidnapped ten years prior. She revealed she was taken to another country and subjected to captivity and sexual assault.

She’s talked a lot about what happened on her social media and website, but she’s never done a formal interview about it.

The upcoming Disney+ documentary tells the life story of the singer, starting with her childhood in Wales, detailing her incredible journey to stardom, and exploring the reasons behind her decision to step away from public life after a difficult period.

I’m really excited about this film! It’s not just about Duffy telling her story – we’ll also get to see amazing old footage and hear from the people who knew and loved her best, like her family, friends, and fellow musicians. It’ll give us a much fuller picture of who she is and her incredible journey.

Disney+’s Sean Doyle noted that Duffy was a hugely popular singer fifteen years ago. Her unique and powerful voice propelled her debut album’s hits, “Mercy” and “Warwick Avenue,” to success, earning her three BRIT Awards and a Grammy, and putting her at the height of her career.

Then, she vanished. This film allows Duffy to share her experiences directly, in her own voice. We deeply appreciate the exceptional access provided by our partners at Rare TV, and we’re thankful to Stellify Media for their thoughtful and sensitive handling of this project.

We partnered with Northern Ireland Screen to find powerful stories about women, and we’re thrilled to be able to start by sharing Duffy’s. I’m especially impressed by Duffy’s bravery and openness in telling her story.
