Fans had a little something to enjoy while waiting for The Batman Part II: the TV series The Penguin, which premiered in fall 2024 and quickly became a hit. Colin Farrell’s performance as Oz Cobb was particularly praised, and the show received a lot of positive attention for its gripping crime story and strong acting. Viewers loved learning more about Oz Cobb, and Cristin Milioti’s character, Sofia Falcone, also became very popular. While many people are hoping for a second season of The Penguin, it doesn’t seem like it will happen at this time.
HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently told Variety that a second season of The Penguin is possible, but challenging. Colin Farrell is committed to The Batman Part II and has other film projects lined up. While everyone involved wants to make it happen, Bloys said they haven’t figured out how yet.
Bloys also mentioned the Amanda Waller spinoff series, but indicated it’s not currently in active development. He did share good news about the upcoming series Lanterns, which is scheduled to release this summer.
DC’s Latest TV Updates Are Disappointing, but Might Be for the Best

I have to say, I was pretty disappointed to hear the news about both The Penguin and Waller. The Penguin really felt like the next big HBO prestige drama – it was a massive hit and quickly drew comparisons to The Sopranos, even breaking Emmy nomination records! And Waller? It was announced way back when James Gunn first laid out his plans for the DC Universe, and it felt like the perfect vehicle to really showcase Viola Davis’ incredible talent. Honestly though, looking at the bigger picture, maybe it is for the best that these projects are on hold for now.
The show The Penguin was originally planned as a limited series to connect Matt Reeves’ first two Batman films, and it successfully did that by showing how Oz Cobb climbed the ranks of Gotham’s criminal world after the Riddler’s attacks. While the creative team is willing to make a second season, they want to ensure there’s a compelling story to tell. They’re not interested in simply continuing the show for the sake of it, which is good to hear. Future seasons will depend on what happens to Oz in The Batman Part II and how his story continues in the films. They’ll revisit the possibility of another season once that next chapter is revealed.
James Gunn mentioned last year that developing the Waller series had been challenging, with early script drafts not quite working. So, the recent news about its progress shouldn’t be a shock. It seems there’s still a lot of work to do, and DC Studios is right to take their time. It might even be beneficial if the series doesn’t move forward at all. The entertainment industry is shifting; the rapid growth of streaming services is slowing down, and companies like Disney are now focusing more on releasing films in theaters. Marvel is producing less content overall, realizing they created too much too quickly, including a lot of streaming shows. DC Studios, from the start, has prioritized quality over quantity – reports suggest they’ll release just one or two movies each year. Rather than overwhelming HBO Max with numerous DC shows, it makes sense to carefully choose which projects get made.
Just because plans for seasons two of Waller and The Penguin aren’t currently underway doesn’t mean they won’t happen eventually. Like with Clayface, all it takes is a compelling script that James Gunn approves. The good news is that DC is taking its time with these projects, which should help maintain a high level of quality. There’s still a lot to be excited about for fans, including the upcoming Lanterns series this summer, and the highly anticipated Supergirl and Clayface films. And in 2027, Superman and Batman will return to the big screen.
