Microsoft has begun to reveal details about its new console, currently known as Project Helix, and one major question has emerged: how difficult will it be for game developers to create games for it? Chris Charla, a manager at Xbox, recently spoke with IGN about this, particularly for developers who are new to the Xbox platform.
Charla explained that the team is focused on making it easier for game developers. The goal is to allow them to create a single version of their game for Xbox that will work across all devices – including the Project Helix console, PCs, and through cloud streaming on devices like smart TVs.
Microsoft plans to support developers working on Project Helix just as much as it currently supports those building for Xbox Series X/S and Windows. Charla suggests developers begin experimenting with Xbox and PC development kits now to prepare for Project Helix. He points out that while PC development can be complex due to the wide range of hardware, targeting a unified platform like Xbox for PC could simplify the process of also releasing games on consoles.
For developers wanting to be prepared for the next generation of Xbox, the advice is to start developing for Xbox consoles and PC now, and utilize the Xbox Play Anywhere program. This approach will give them a head start on the next generation and ensure their PC games work seamlessly on the upcoming Project Helix hardware. While specific implementation will vary, developers currently building for Steam or standard PC may find it easier to begin with the Xbox PC version and then adapt it for consoles. More details on leveraging Project Helix’s hardware features will be released soon, but starting now guarantees a native build for the new platform.
Charla shared his positive views on Asha Sharma, the new CEO of Microsoft Gaming, and what her leadership will bring to the company. He highlighted the three key principles Sharma outlined during her first meeting with the Xbox team, and expressed overall optimism for Xbox’s future. He believes it’s a fantastic time to be a gamer.
Microsoft recently announced Project Helix, and although they haven’t shared many details about its technology, early reports suggest it could be more powerful than Sony’s next PlayStation (the PS6), based on initial specifications.
