Jamie Lee Curtis Set to Reboot Beloved 1980s TV Series As Feature Film (And It Could Start A Franchise)

Jamie Lee Curtis has proven her range as an actress with recent roles in films and shows like Knives Out, Halloween Kills, Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Bear, Freakier Friday, and Scarpetta. Now, she’s taking on a new project: bringing back a popular 1980s TV series as a movie, which could potentially launch a whole new film series.

According to a new report from Variety, Jamie Lee Curtis is set to star in a movie based on the popular 80s detective series, Murder She Wrote. She will be taking on the role of Jessica Fletcher, the crime-solving writer famously played by Angela Lansbury. While plot details are still under wraps, Universal Pictures plans to release the film in theaters on December 22, 2027.

This Could Be The Beginning of a Murder She Wrote Movie Franchise

Originally airing in 1984, Murder She Wrote was a huge success for CBS, running for 12 seasons. It remains popular in reruns even today. However, the show hasn’t been significantly revisited or used in new ways for quite some time.

Honestly, I think now is the absolute perfect time to bring this show back, and with Jamie Lee Curtis leading the charge? Even better! The original ran for an incredible 264 episodes, mostly standalone mysteries, which means there’s a huge library of cases they can draw from to create something fresh and exciting. It’s a fantastic foundation for a new take on the series.

Whether the new films feature completely new mysteries or revisit old ones, they should still capture the spirit of the original series and be adaptable for several installments. A key element of the show was Jessica Fletcher, a mystery novelist living in the charming town of Cabot Cove, and how she became involved in each week’s case. The supporting characters – her friends, neighbors, and the local sheriffs – also added a lot to the stories. Memorable figures included Dr. Hazlitt, Sheriff Amos Tupper, Grady Fletcher, Sheriff Mort Metzger, and Harry McGray.

Just because the show is set in a small town doesn’t mean Jessica Fletcher won’t travel and solve mysteries elsewhere. She always had a reliable support system back home in Cabot Cove, and that network of friends and colleagues would expand with each new case. This formula worked brilliantly, largely thanks to Angela Lansbury’s captivating performance, and it could work just as well with the new reboot. We’ve already seen successful mystery franchises launched with series like Knives Out and the recent Hercule Poirot mysteries, and Murder, She Wrote has the potential to be the next big one.

Although specific details are still under wraps, we now know Jason Moore, the director of Pitch Perfect, will helm the reboot. The script is being written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who also worked on Dumb Money. The film will be produced through Universal’s deal with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal will also serve as a producer.

Murder She Wrote will land in theaters on December 22, 2027.
