Nintendo Announces Big Change to Switch 2 Game Prices

Nintendo is adjusting how it prices games for the Switch 2. Initially, the launch title Mario Kart World received some criticism for its $80 price tag. Now, Nintendo is clarifying its future pricing strategy, and the changes aren’t expected to be negative. While Mario Kart World was a bit expensive, Nintendo suggests other Switch 2 games won’t necessarily follow suit.

I just saw on Nintendo’s website that they’re starting to price physical and digital games differently! It looks like starting in May, digital games will generally be a little cheaper. The first game affected will be the new Yoshi and the Mysterious Book – it’ll be $60 to download, but $70 if you want the physical copy. It’s interesting to see them finally make this change!

Nintendo explained that whether you buy a game as a physical cartridge or download it digitally, the gameplay experience will be the same. This adjustment to pricing simply accounts for the different costs of making and selling each version, and gives players more options for how they purchase Nintendo games. Nintendo also noted that retailers are free to set their own prices, so costs can vary between stores and digital platforms.

This Is a Surprisingly Good Move by Nintendo

As a Nintendo fan, I was a little worried when I heard about potential price increases, especially since I like to buy physical copies of games. But honestly, I think Nintendo actually made a smart move. It seems like they were planning to charge $70 for every new game, period. Instead, they’re giving us a choice: if you’re okay with downloading games, you can still get them for a bit less. I really wish more game companies would do this! So much of what we pay for games is just the cost of making and shipping the physical cartridges, so offering a cheaper digital option makes a lot of sense.

Since Switch 2 will still heavily feature digital game codes, buying games online instead of as physical copies makes even more sense. This decision from Nintendo is unexpected, considering their past practice of maintaining high game prices, but it’s hoped that other companies will adopt similar practices in the future.
