Age of Attraction Stars Reveal Truth About Casting Process

Love knows no bounds—age or otherwise—and the Age of Attraction cast knows that better than anyone.

Despite age differences, several couples on the show—including Derrick Fleming and Pfeifer Hill, Theresa Demaria and John Merrill, Libby Vodicka and Andrew Wheeler, and Logan Goodrid and Vanessa Drozda—chose to commit to each other in the March 25th finale.

The people involved in the show, who were between 22 and 60 years old, weren’t always sure they’d be able to find love through such an unusual process.

Derrick, 43, shared that he was initially worried about being on the Netflix reality show, as he generally keeps to himself.

He explained to People that his friends and family questioned his decision to be on a Netflix show, pointing out his private Instagram account and the potential changes it would bring. However, he said their reaction wasn’t really negative – they were mostly just surprised and wondered if he was prepared for the experience.

Leah Woolfolk, a 41-year-old flight attendant, and Chris Dahlan, 26, connected on a show, but he ended things with her in the final episode, even though she wanted to continue dating. Leah felt uneasy about sharing so much of her personal life and opening up on camera.

I tend to keep my relationships private and don’t usually share a lot about them,” she explained. “What I really wanted most was to find the right person for me.”

Meanwhile, Andrew, 38, said his loved ones had a different concern about the show.

He confessed his mother initially believed it was a scam. She had asked if there was any official documentation to prove its legitimacy, and he reassured her, ‘Mom, it’s not a scam.’

Theresa, age 54, was reluctant because of the timing and how it might affect her family. She didn’t want to put her three adult children in the spotlight without their consent.

I was immediately thrown into the show right after my youngest child graduated from college. I hadn’t really had time to process that big life change and prepare for this new adventure.

However, not everyone’s journey to Age of Attraction was surrounded with skepticism.

Chris believed his decision wouldn’t surprise those who knew him well. He told People magazine that everyone on the show had a connection and a reason for being there, and he expected most people would understand and be supportive.

He said the funniest response he got was people questioning how old the person he was portraying should be. They were like, ‘Seriously? You’re 26, don’t pick someone much older!’ It was just a humorous reaction overall.

John, who is 27, said his friends and family were completely understanding about his relationship with Theresa, making their 27-year age difference less of a shock to them.

Honestly, seeing how close he is with his friends and family just makes the show, you know? It’s so clear he has this amazing support system. That’s why he always seemed so calm and collected, even when things were crazy! They were always there, cheering him on, telling him to go for it, and it totally shines through. It’s everything!

Logan, age 29, said his friends and family weren’t bothered by the age gap in his relationship.

He recalled the show was originally called “Ageless Dating,” and people immediately jumped to conclusions about what that meant – assuming it would focus on stereotypical age-gap relationships. He didn’t mind the assumptions, but those closest to him were very understanding. He’d dated people both older and, to a lesser extent, younger than himself before, so it wasn’t a surprise to them.

In the end, Logan was the only contestant to leave the show engaged. He proposed to Vanessa, who is 49, during the final episode, even though there’s a 20-year age difference between them.

Vanessa shared that while she’d imagined many possible outcomes before coming on the show, she never expected to find her future husband. ‘I came in with an open heart, and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out,’ she said after accepting his proposal.

Even though there was a 20-year age difference, Pfeifer decided to move from Seattle to Dallas to attempt a relationship with the father of two, a move she described as a sacrifice.

She told him at their commitment ceremony how incredibly lucky she felt to have found him. ‘So many people search their whole lives for what we have,’ she said, ‘and I’d always regret leaving without you.’

Theresa received a supportive letter from her three grown children, which gave her the confidence to move forward with her relationship despite the age difference – she’s 54 and he’s 27. Feeling validated, they decided to pursue their love and have a commitment ceremony.

Honestly, finding out they wrote that to you just… it made my whole day, seriously! I didn’t even know what it said, but just knowing it existed, that they did it… I can’t even explain how good it felt. It’s like, I just… I can’t walk away now. It’s not about grand gestures or anything, it’s just… the connection. That’s what really matters, not birthdays or anything superficial. It’s them.

Oh my gosh, Vanessa was so into Logan, practically begging him to let her sweep him off his feet and share her life with him! But Logan? Ugh, he was being so frustrating! He kept saying things like he wasn’t sure he was good enough for her, like she was some prize he didn’t deserve! Honestly, the age gap was just a detail, he was acting like it was some huge deal and that he wasn’t the right guy for her, it was killing me!

He questioned whether their relationship was harmful or good, and on Commitment Day, he asked for the promise ring back, suggesting he was ending things.

Once they removed the rings, Logan was finally prepared to propose, and surprisingly, he got down on one knee.

He described their journey together as an exciting and unpredictable one, but expressed his commitment to continuing it. He passionately shared his deep affection for her, saying she deserves all the best things in life, including a championship ring like the one Kobe Bryant received.

He proposed with an engagement ring, asking her to spend the rest of her life with him, and she happily accepted. This will be her fifth time getting engaged.

Chris, 15 years younger than Leah, ended the relationship because he felt overwhelmed by her constant desire to be with him.

We’ve discussed our differing viewpoints and were upfront about what we each expect in a relationship. It seems we both envision having a family and settling down, but perhaps at different speeds, he said. He also felt the age gap created unnecessary pressure, making it difficult for him to be himself – something he hadn’t experienced before.

As he put it, “That’s why ultimately, I feel that this partnership is not right.”

So, how did Leah react to the breakup? 

I’ve always wanted someone to choose me, but I refused to chase after it. I also realized I can’t change anyone to fit my ideal. I came to this retreat hoping to find love, but it didn’t happen. Ultimately, I discovered my own strength and worth. I now know I’m a strong, intelligent, and beautiful woman, and whoever I end up with will be lucky to have me.

He worried he might be holding Libby back from enjoying her twenties, but she told Andrew, who is sixteen years older than her, that she believed he would simply enhance her life.

He told her, “It feels like my time has come, like maybe I’ve finally found my happy ending.” He laughed and admitted he was being corny, then confessed he’d been thinking about their future. “I’m not sure what people call it now—like a ‘hard launch’ or a ‘soft launch,’ or whatever the cool kids are doing—but I’d really like to start dating you officially and leave here with you as my girlfriend.”

Libby agreed, with the pair making plans for her to go to Baltimore to meet his daughters.

Despite a significant age difference – he was 33 years older than her – the couple didn’t last until the final Commitment Day. They broke up while still living together, due to conflicts about Vanelle choosing to remain celibate and an incident where Jorge argued with someone in public.

However, she noted, “I don’t necessarily think it has anything to do with his age.”
