New Lord of the Rings Movie Breaks a Cardinal Tolkien Rule (& Is the Closest Thing to His Cancelled Story)

It’s surprising, but several new Lord of the Rings movies are now in development. The biggest news is a film co-written by Stephen Colbert called The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past. This movie is set 14 years after the events of The Return of the King, after Frodo, Bilbo, and Gandalf have sailed to the Undying Lands. The story will follow the adventures of hobbits Merry, Pippin, and Sam, and will also introduce Sam’s daughter as a character.

Merry, Pippin, and Sam went through a lot of difficult experiences during the original story – though not as much as Frodo – and they all found happiness in the end. They were sad to see Frodo leave, but they returned to the Shire as heroes after a dangerous adventure. Sam even married Rosie Cotton, a woman he’d always loved, and they had a family. The new story seems to follow these hobbits as they revisit places from their past journey. However, the movie appears to be ignoring some of the established rules of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world.

Tolkien Didn’t Want A Sequel After Return of the King

As a long-time fantasy fan, I have to say J.R.R. Tolkien really set the standard with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The books themselves are masterpieces, of course, but what’s truly remarkable is how well those stories translated to the big screen. Peter Jackson did an incredible job bringing Middle-earth to life, and the resulting trilogy is, in my opinion, one of the best book-to-film adaptations ever made.

Given the grand finale of Return of the King, it’s understandable that writing a follow-up was a challenge, and J.R.R. Tolkien actually began to write one but eventually abandoned the project. He reportedly sketched out a sequel, initially called The New Shadow, which would have taken place around 100 years after the War of the Ring.

We don’t have much to work with – only about thirteen pages of that early story were ever written. This is a huge difference from the finished Lord of the Rings books. It was probably hard to continue with a new story that didn’t feel as inspiring as the last one. But when Tolkien decided to abandon the project, he seemed to believe Return of the King shouldn’t have a continuation, and now that decision is being reversed.

Colbert’s Movie Borrows From Tolkien’s Scrapped Story

Not much is known about Stephen Colbert’s upcoming Lord of the Rings movie yet, though he’s said to be co-writing it with Philippa Boyens and his son, Peter McGee. The title, Shadow of the Past, seems to link to an abandoned Tolkien story called The New Shadow, hinting that the movie will likely take inspiration from it. This connection makes sense, as the film is confirmed to take place after the events of Return of the King.

However, this movie seems poised to go against Tolkien’s original vision by creating a sequel – something he intentionally avoided. This decision is already causing disagreement among fans. Interestingly, the film will also draw inspiration from parts of The Fellowship of the Ring that weren’t included in Peter Jackson’s adaptations, which at least shows respect for Tolkien’s source material. Still, making a movie set after the end of Tolkien’s published work is a daring move.

The Lord of the Rings Has a Lot Going on Right Now

As a big fan of Middle-earth, I was genuinely surprised to hear about Shadow of the Past. It’s wild to think there are now multiple Lord of the Rings projects happening! Honestly, after The Hobbit was stretched into three films that just didn’t live up to the original trilogy, it felt like the franchise had lost its spark. But things have really turned around! We got The Rings of Power on Prime Video – and season 3 is still coming – and then, just this year, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim anime movie came out. It’s a great time to be a fan!

As a huge fan of Middle-earth, I’ve been hearing a lot about another new Lord of the Rings film, The Hunt for Gollum. It’s supposed to fill in the gap between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Aragorn’s search for Gollum. Honestly, it and the other new projects have caused a bit of a debate among fans – a lot of us feel like some stories are best left untouched. But on top of that, there’s also news that Stephen Colbert is working on his own take with Shadow of the Past, which is… interesting, to say the least!
