Invincible season 4’s William recast explained: Who voices him now?

While episode 4 of Invincible season 4 offered a fresh storyline diverging from the original comics, the biggest surprise for many viewers was the change in voice actor for the character William Clockwell.

Episode 4 of Hurm delivered on creator Robert Kirkman’s promise of a story significantly different from the original comic. The episode reintroduced the demon detective Damien Darkblood and featured Mark unexpectedly assisting Satan in reclaiming control of Hell.

The surprise came near the end of the episode, around the 46-minute mark, when William’s voice suddenly sounded different. It was lighter and less whiny than how Andrew Rannells, who voiced the character for the first three seasons, had portrayed him.

If you missed the details about Eve’s pregnancy announcement to William and also wondered about the change in her voice, here’s an explanation of the new voice actor and why a replacement was necessary.

Starting with season 4, Brandon Scott Jones began voicing the character of William. Fans first noticed the change in episode 4 when William learns about Eve’s unexpected pregnancy.

Many viewers will recognize Jones from his previous roles, like Captain Isaac Higgintoot in the American version of ‘Ghosts’ and John Wheaton in ‘The Good Place.’ This experience makes him well-suited to play William, though some fans might be surprised by the change.

What happened with William Clockwell’s recasting in Invincible season 4?

As a huge fan of Invincible, I’m really puzzled by the recasting of William for season 4. So far, Prime Video, the showrunners Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, or even Andrew Rannells himself haven’t said a word about why it happened. It’s just…weird, and I’m hoping we get some answers soon!

TopMob recently questioned Kirkman about why Aaron Paul won’t reprise his role as Powerplex in season 4, and Kirkman’s response suggests a possible reason. He explained that it can be challenging to get actors with busy schedules to return for very small parts—just a scene or two—because scheduling conflicts often determine whether they can participate.

That reasoning also applies to William. According to a review from The Comics Beat, William appears in just a single scene throughout Invincible season 4.

Given how much Ben Rannells has been working, the possibility of him reprising a role makes even more sense. He’s been busy with TV and film projects like Another Simple Favor, Night Court, Too Much, and Eisbeth, and he also returned to the Broadway stage in January 2025, performing in All In: Comedy About Love.

Rannels is particularly excited about the 15th anniversary of The Book of Mormon, the musical he’s best known for. He’s marking the occasion with a special “Magical Mormon Mystery Week” where he’ll perform his original role as Elder Price again.

Kirkman said scheduling can be tricky because voice actors are often busy with other projects. It’s hard to guarantee their availability for animation, as they might be working on films or TV shows. Since the show uses popular and in-demand actors, there will inevitably be times when they aren’t able to record when needed.

We don’t know the official reason why the actor playing William has been replaced, but it’s likely due to scheduling conflicts. Rannells has been busy with other work, particularly on Broadway, and it probably wasn’t practical for him to film even a small scene for season 4 of Invincible.

If William’s voice in the first three seasons of Invincible sounds familiar, it’s probably because you recognize actor Andrew Rannells from other roles. He’s well-known for playing Elder Kevin Price in the musical The Book of Mormon and Matthew MacDell in the Netflix series Big Mouth.

If you enjoyed the hit show The Boys on Amazon Prime, you might recognize Andrew Rannells’ voice. He played the ice skater in season 4’s hilarious Vought on Ice segment, “Let’s Put the Christ Back in Christmas,” which many fans considered the highlight of the entire musical parody.
