Capcom’s new game, Pragmata, is a third-person shooter set on a lunar research station that’s been overrun by dangerous artificial intelligence. But don’t expect a purely bleak environment – it won’t just be cold, grey hallways and bright lights.
The game also features a city environment inspired by New York, but with a deliberately unsettling feel. According to game director Cho Yonghee, this strangeness is intentional.
In a recent interview, he explained that the game’s environment was designed to appear as if it had been generated by AI.
Within the story, Lunafilament is an incredible substance that can build almost anything, and it appears to have been used to rebuild cities like New York City.
So, with Pragmata, we’re building the game around a New York City that’s actually been created by AI. We wanted a place players would recognize, but with this weird, ‘off’ feeling – like things are just a little bit distorted and not quite right.
Producer Naoto Oyama elaborated further:
The world looks realistic, but it’s strangely off-kilter – things like taxis falling through floors and buses growing out of walls create a disorienting effect. While it seems like this is created by artificial intelligence, it’s actually the result of our developers carefully crafting these unsettling details by hand.
The developers of Pragmata painstakingly crafted the game’s environments to look as if they were created by artificial intelligence, despite building everything by hand.
Cho explained that it was challenging to find the right balance, as significantly altering the game’s environment could either pull players out of the experience or mislead them.
He explained that distortion – changing the shape of something in a new way – creates a sense of uniqueness. However, if these changes are too strange, players might assume they’re clues for puzzles or that the environment is hiding something. The challenge was finding a balance – making the distortions interesting without making them seem significant.
We recently had a chance to play a preview version of the game, and we were really impressed with the New York area in particular. Development is progressing well, and we’re looking forward to playing the finished game when it launches on April 17th.
