It’s well known that game development costs are skyrocketing. According to Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, today’s big-budget, or ‘AAA,’ games often cost around $300 million to make – and can even exceed that amount.
Although exact AAA game budgets are hard to confirm, the recent wave of layoffs and studio closures in the gaming industry may be due to these games becoming increasingly expensive to develop.
Video game budgets are hard to confirm, and it would be great if publishers were more open about spending. However, according to Jason Schreier on BlueSky, current AAA game development costs are often $300 million or higher – and can even be significantly more. He believes this explains a lot about the current video game industry.
He clarified that these budget numbers are only for games developed in the United States and Canada. Games made in other parts of the world might still be large-scale, even with smaller budgets, depending on the local market. He also pointed out that these budgets primarily cover developer salaries and basic operating expenses. Executive pay isn’t included, as it usually comes from company stock options.
In July 2025, Shuhei Yoshida, a former executive at PlayStation, also pointed out that game development costs were becoming extremely high. He explained that companies previously believed investing in things like high-quality graphics and realistic characters would keep players engaged for longer.
Yoshida explained that investing heavily in a game’s development actually boosted their confidence in its success. He noted that developers were eager to create more ambitious games with improved graphics, realistic characters, and extensive gameplay when given the resources to do so.
This approach unfortunately led to a decline in smaller, independent games being approved, as most of the budget was dedicated to large sequels and blockbuster titles. Yoshida also noted that developing games for the PlayStation 4 and 5 has become significantly more expensive compared to previous generations.
Yoshida explained that a recent cost analysis of a popular game franchise showed its budget had doubled between the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 generations. This has led to a situation where recovering the investment is no longer possible. He believes this is the first time the gaming industry has widely recognized the need for change in how games are funded and developed.
Many successful games outside of the US and Canada are made with limited funding. For example, the award-winning RPG Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was created with a budget under $10 million. The developers, Sandfall Interactive, achieved this by prioritizing strong RPG mechanics and avoiding the complexities of an open-world design.
In contrast, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be a huge game not just in terms of what you play, but also how much it cost to make. Experts predict the total development budget will be over $1.5 billion by its release date of November 19th.
It’s hard to get exact numbers for how much video games cost to make, and publishers could be more open about it. However, I’ve been hearing that modern, high-budget (AAA) games often cost $300 million or even much more to develop. This high cost, I believe, is a major reason why the video game industry is the way it is today.
