Update #2 [Thu 26th Mar 2026, 1pm]:
Capcom has apologized for the controversy surrounding a new storyline in Street Fighter. The plot involves a relationship between characters who are both cousins and step-siblings, and has caused confusion and upset among fans.
Based on established backstory and details revealed in World Tour mode, the wrestler shared a childhood with Patricia, who was the daughter of his adoptive father, Tom.
Other text suggests the pair are related, as Tom is the cousin of Alex’s Mum.
So, it all gets a bit weird and has attracted an understandable backlash.
Director Takayuki Nakayama stated that the company intends to change some wording that could have been confusing.
We expect this change will eliminate any suggestion that Alex and Patricia are family, though some in-game artwork still depicts Alex holding her as an infant.
Capcom recently added backstory to its website explaining that Alex left home when he was young. This seems to be an effort to show Alex and Patricia didn’t have a typical childhood together, likely to make their eventual marriage appear less strange.
But so far, fans aren’t buying it.
One wrote on X (or Twitter):
Let’s be clear: you’ve drastically changed Alex’s relationship with his second cousin, turning it from a childhood connection into a marriage and pregnancy. The strong reaction from Street Fighter fans isn’t confusion, it’s something much stronger – I can assure you of that.
Another shared the following image to illustrate their thoughts:
We’re holding off on a final opinion until Capcom shows us the changes they’re making. However, it seems like they’ve created some difficult problems for themselves with no simple solutions.
The latest story development featuring Alex has surprised even longtime employees at Capcom, as it involves an inappropriate and shocking family relationship.
Okay, so in Street Fighter 6, they’re adding a new DLC character who’s apparently married to Patricia. This is kinda wild because a lot of us thought Patricia was his adopted sister! And get this – she’s pregnant too. It’s a whole storyline I didn’t see coming.
Hidetoshi Ishizawa, the planner for Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, shared his thoughts on the surprising news via X (formerly Twitter).
He wrote, as Google Translated:
I hadn’t seen it yet, so I looked at spoilers online. It was a big surprise – I was expecting a different outcome, like they’d focus on a sibling relationship, but it turned out they ended up together as childhood friends. I definitely wasn’t expecting that!
It will be interesting to see if Capcom acknowledges this issue or simply moves forward as if it didn’t occur.
Okay, so Alex from Street Fighter 3 is finally in Street Fighter 6! Honestly, everyone’s talking about him, but it’s not really how he plays that’s got people buzzing – it’s something else entirely.
Recent surprising changes to the backstory of a popular Capcom character have caused a stir among fans. It appears the character, known for their face paint and wrestling, may be involved in a somewhat inappropriate family relationship – though the details are complicated.
Look, the evidence mounting against Alex is somewhat comprehensive but crucially not conclusive.
Simply put, Alex’s storyline in Street Fighter 3 centers around revenge. He’s determined to get even for what happened to his adoptive father, Tom.
There’s discussion about whether Tom is truly Alex’s father or simply a mentor, but in World Tour, Alex does describe him as a father figure.
The issue is that Tom’s daughter, Patricia, has always been seen as more like a little sister to Alex.
In Street Fighter 6’s story, Luke and his wife are expecting a baby. We also learn that Luke is related to Alex’s mother – making him a cousin to Alex, and technically a relative to Patricia, though the connection might not be by blood.
Ultimately, this whole situation is strange and surprising. The game Street Fighter 6 includes artwork of Alex holding Patricia as an infant, which is unsettling even if you don’t consider the implications some people are suggesting.
Capcom likely intended for the story to be touching, but when you look closely, it just feels a little strange.
Look, let’s be real, Street Fighter games aren’t usually about the story, and I get that. But there’s a ton of extra stuff out there – comics, novels, all sorts of things – that do tell stories about these characters. So, it feels a little off when people act like fans shouldn’t care about the narrative at all. We do care!
It’s possible the story might be changed again later on. Regardless, Capcom now has a plot issue they need to resolve.
