Netflix has consistently been a major force in popularizing anime globally. They’ve done this through original anime series like The Summer Hikaru Died, Sakamoto Days, and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Steel Ball Run, as well as live-action adaptations of well-known titles such as One Piece. This puts them in a strong position in the competitive streaming landscape. In 2024, Studio MAPPA teamed up with Netflix to revive a beloved classic anime, and a new trailer has just been released for its highly anticipated third season, which draws from a wealth of source material in the original manga.
The classic anime series Ranma 1/2, which originally aired in 1989, is getting a revival! Based on the popular manga by Rumiko Takahashi (known for series like Inuyasha, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, Urusei Yatsura, and Mao), the new season is being produced by MAPPA and began in 2024. A recent trailer focuses on a major fight between Ranma and Ryoga, hinting at the content from the manga’s third season. MAPPA, known for visually stunning animation in shows like Jujutsu Kaisen and Hell’s Paradise, promises a thrilling experience for fans of action-packed anime. The new season is scheduled to premiere this October, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
The Legacy of Ranma
I’m really excited about the return of Ranma 1/2 with its third season! But honestly, it’s got a ways to go to recapture the magic of the original series. That first show, animated by Studio Deen, was a classic – over 160 episodes bringing Rumiko Takahashi’s manga to life over almost ten years! While Ranma is definitely more focused on comedy than something like Inuyasha or Mao, I’m loving what Studio MAPPA is doing with the fight scenes. They’re really bringing a new level of energy to them, which is awesome considering how important those fights are to the whole series!
It’s not unexpected to see this well-loved anime make a comeback, given how popular the series is. However, it is surprising considering how many projects MAPPA currently has in the works. Jujutsu Kaisen is wrapping up the first part of its Culling Game arc this week, and the studio is also producing the second season of Hell’s Paradise. Adding to their busy schedule, MAPPA is teaming up with Netflix to bring back Dorohedoro for a second season next month. With ongoing work on the next installment of Chainsaw Man and season two of Oblivion Battery, MAPPA is consistently one of the most productive anime studios. Fans of Ranma are hoping Netflix continues adapting the manga, potentially leading to more seasons in the future.
