In a statement released on March 24th, the company announced plans to reshape its business for long-term success. A key part of this plan is launching Disney cruises in Japan by 2028, which they believe will be a major driver of future growth, alongside the continued success of Tokyo Disney Resort.
Planned Ship and Timeline
Building the first ship should start in April 2026 and finish by sometime in 2028. We plan to begin using the ship for service within the same year, which runs through March 2029.
Meyer Werft in Germany is constructing the ship, which is based on the design of the Disney Wish. Disney is working with the shipbuilder on the design and creative aspects. The finished ship will meet Japanese safety standards and appeal to local tastes.
Partnership Structure
Tokyo Disney Resort is run by Oriental Land Company through a licensing agreement with Disney, and the new cruise line will operate under the same kind of arrangement.
Disney will contribute ideas and characters, while Oriental Land Company will manage the funding, ownership, and day-to-day running of the park. This partnership follows a successful pattern they’ve already established with theme parks in Japan.
This cruise line is a continuation of a partnership announced in 2024 between the two companies. The original agreement detailed plans for a Disney cruise ship sailing from Japan, with its first voyages scheduled for 2029.
