After Becoming a Netflix Hit, 2025’s Overlooked Action Movie Sequel Badly Needs a 3rd Movie

The success of John Wick in 2014 paved the way for a new style of action movie – one with incredibly detailed and intense fight choreography. Since then, we’ve seen not only three Wick sequels and a spin-off film, but also several other movies that follow a similar formula. Many of these films involve either David Leitch or Chad Stahelski, the co-directors of the original John Wick. Stahelski directed all three Wick sequels and also produced Day Shift and Ballerina, both of which feature comparable action sequences. Leitch’s Atomic Blonde is the most obvious film inspired by Wick, but he’s also produced others like Violent Night and Love Hurts that share similar elements.

When Keanu Reeves fans are asked about their favorite action movie similar to John Wick, many choose Nobody. It was definitely the most unexpected hit – a comedy writer who’d worked on shows like Late Night with Conan O’Brien and Saturday Night Live, and even acted on Mr. Show with Bob and David, suddenly became an incredibly effective fighter? It sounds unbelievable, but it worked really well. Although interest faded after four years, a third Nobody movie should still happen.

How Poorly Did Nobody 2 Perform?

Simply put, Nobody 2 wasn’t a flop, but its opening weekend earnings were significantly lower than the first Nobody film. It made $43 million compared to the original’s $57.5 million, despite having a $25 million production budget versus $16 million. This is concerning for investors. It’s especially noteworthy because the first movie benefited from being released when theaters were just starting to reopen after pandemic closures.

The movie’s sequel is currently performing well on Netflix, which is a great sign for the future of the series. It’s a good film, so viewers are enjoying it and are likely interested in seeing a third installment. A third Nobody movie could even premiere directly on Netflix – anything is possible these days.

Honestly, Ballerina really bombed at the box office last summer, which was a shame because I thought it was a much better movie than it got credit for. Nobody 2 didn’t exactly set the world on fire either, but it did okay. Thankfully, with all the money coming in from people renting and streaming it, it’s definitely made its money back and is probably profitable now.

Despite the disappointing performance of Ballerina, a spin-off centered around Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, is still moving forward with a planned filming date. If the John Wick universe can recover from a major flop, there’s even more reason to believe Nobody can succeed despite a less severe setback.

The second Nobody film is still fun to watch, even if it’s not quite as good as the first. It’s a bit lighter in tone and more comedic, but still delivers plenty of exciting action – this time, the action happens during a family trip to a water park. If the creators can introduce another fresh setting and slightly different feel in a third film, the trilogy could end on a truly satisfying note.

Plus, Bob Odenkirk seems to enjoy action movies. After starring in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, he’s already working on another action film called Normal. It’s being written by Derek Kolstad, the creator of the John Wick and Nobody series. So, a third Nobody movie is definitely still a possibility, as everyone involved is eager to continue.
