The BBC’s plan for 2026/2027 outlines a need for significant changes and acknowledges that difficult decisions will have to be made.
The BBC’s new annual plan, released today, emphasizes its continued importance, while also acknowledging growing financial challenges.
The BBC’s priorities for the coming year remain consistent: delivering impartial and accurate reporting, supporting British-made content, and uniting audiences.
Besides limited funding, Davie pointed to a difficult media environment characterized by overwhelming options, changing viewer behavior, and growing competition.

The BBC is moving forward with its plans to modernize its digital operations. This includes using artificial intelligence to save money and creating content specifically for platforms like its official YouTube channel.
The BBC also revealed plans to launch BBC News on YouTube, aiming to reach younger audiences and combat the spread of misinformation.
The plan details a full year of programming, with the BBC aiming to broadcast 7,480 hours of original content – a 55-hour increase from the previous year.
Popular shows like Line of Duty, Amandaland, and The Traitors are returning, alongside new dramas such as James Graham’s Dear England and Half Man, a Glasgow-based series from the creator of Baby Reindeer, Richard Gadd.
The network will broadcast the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup and also host a large event to celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday.

According to BBC chair Samir Shah, the BBC is vitally important today, and its future plans demonstrate how valuable it is to everyone in the UK.
The BBC Board is working on a new agreement that will ensure the BBC remains relevant and valuable for years to come. This means being there for audiences whenever and wherever they want us, while also boosting the UK’s creative industries and providing services throughout the country.
Davie also stated that the BBC will deliver a year filled with innovative content, excellent shows, and top-quality British storytelling.
The BBC is facing unprecedented challenges and is more vulnerable than ever before. Due to financial difficulties, increased competition from other media, and shifts in how people consume content, the organization needs to make difficult decisions and change how it works in the coming year.
The new agreement must deliver significant changes so the BBC can remain independent, accessible to everyone, and financially secure for the future.
The report also highlighted strong audience numbers, revealing that the BBC reaches almost everyone in the UK – around 52 million adults, or 94% of the population – each month through its various services.
The platform reports reaching nine out of ten people aged 16 to 34 each month, positioning it as the only UK brand among the top five media choices for young adults.
The BBC recently released its yearly report alongside the announcement of its new director-general, Matt Brittin. Brittin previously worked at Google, competed as an athlete for Team GB in the Olympics, and is a big fan of Doctor Who.
His appointment comes as current director-general Tim Davie prepares to step down next month.
