Early looks at Housemarque’s Saros are now available, showcasing 15 minutes of gameplay from the first area, Shattered Rise, and a battle with the first major boss. This is where the core gameplay really comes into focus. Creative director Gregory Louden explained to PlayStation Blog that this game is designed to be more of a “playground” for experimentation, unlike the more challenging “obstacle course” feel of Returnal. The goal is to give players lots of options and opportunities, especially with projectiles. Instead of just avoiding enemy fire, you’ll actively seek it out to charge up Prominence, your powerful weapon.
Arjun discovered this ability through a strange artifact, and it’s connected to his Soltari Shield. It works by absorbing blue attacks to charge up the Prominence, which then fires a powerful blast when you fully hold down the L2 button. A quick press of L2 activates a secondary fire mode, similar to the one in the game Returnal. However, the shield doesn’t last forever, and its duration depends on your Power level.
This means you’ll need to quickly decide when to attack – absorbing more shots lets you use your Prominence ability more often – and when to stay back, particularly when enemies are shooting other things. Some enemies in the Ancient Ruins have protective shields, so you’ll need to get close to damage them. And then there’s Bastion, who fires a dangerous orange laser surrounded by blue bullets that you can try to absorb if you’re feeling risky.
Saros will be available on PlayStation 5 starting April 30th, and early impressions suggest it’s a significant improvement over Returnal. You can find details about its permanent progression system here.
