Netflix users don’t have much time left to watch a hidden sci-fi gem before it disappears from the platform. While Netflix boasts a large collection of science fiction movies – recently adding the first three Jurassic World films and with more like Lucy and A Quiet Place Part II coming in April – another sci-fi movie will no longer be available to stream in just one week. So, if you’re looking for something to watch, now’s the time to check it out!
Just because a movie makes a lot of money doesn’t always mean it’s considered a classic, and sometimes big hits get overlooked. That happened with Neill Blomkamp’s 2013 sci-fi action film, Elysium. Starring Matt Damon, it’s set in a future where a sick factory worker tries to reach a luxurious space station to save his life. While it earned $286 million, Elysium didn’t quite live up to the buzz surrounding Blomkamp’s earlier film, District 9, and has become something of an underrated sci-fi gem. It’s worth another watch, but unfortunately, it’s leaving streaming services on April 1st, so you only have a week left to see it.
Elysium Is a Hidden Gem of 2010s Sci-Fi
Science fiction experienced a major resurgence in the 2010s, combining thought-provoking stories with impressive visuals and widespread popularity. While films like Interstellar, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Arrival often get the most attention, Elysium is a standout that deserves more recognition. Although it received mixed reactions when it came out – currently holding a 64% score from critics and 58% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes – many believe Elysium was unfairly overlooked and is worth revisiting.
Similar to District 9, Elysium is a science fiction film rooted in a realistic and often harsh portrayal of life. Instead of the sleek, futuristic look common in the genre, the movie contrasts a crowded, polluted Earth with the wealthy, advanced space station of Elysium to offer sharp commentary on issues like the gap between rich and poor, unequal access to healthcare, and immigration. Director Neill Blomkamp is skilled at creating believable dystopian worlds by combining a documentary-like, gritty style with high-tech science fiction, making the future feel real and lived-in. Elysium powerfully depicts a dark future and the problems of class division, all while delivering exciting action and impressive special effects.
Where to Stream Elysium After It Leaves Netflix?
If you’re a sci-fi fan, don’t miss your chance to watch Elysium on Netflix, as it might not be available for long. It hasn’t been added to other streaming services’ April schedules, so its future on those platforms is uncertain. Even if it leaves streaming services, you’ll still be able to rent or buy the movie online.
