The recent Star Wars films made by Disney have caused a lot of disagreement among fans. The sequel trilogy – The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker – really started the debate, and it’s continued ever since. However, one actor involved thinks that, eventually, people will start to enjoy those films as much as they do the prequels from the early 2000s.

Ever since The Force Awakens came out over ten years ago, people have been optimistic about where the story could go. However, a lot of fans still feel the same way they always have.
A Puppeteer Speaks Out
Brian Herring helped bring BB-8 and the porgs to life in the recent Star Wars sequels. These characters were intended to be as popular with a new audience as R2-D2 or the Ewoks once were, but whether they succeeded is still up for debate, just like the movies themselves. However, Herring believes their popularity will grow over time.
Herring believes the current debate around the sequels is similar to the initial reaction to the prequels. He recently told Gamereactor that the prequels were just as divisive when they were first released.
He also pointed out that the internet makes criticism much louder. He thinks if online fan groups had been around when George Lucas made his earlier Star Wars films, the negative reaction would have been just as strong.

Herring believes that in ten years, the popularity of the sequels will become clear. He’s noticed that while there’s online criticism, the biggest fans—who he meets frequently—are a much younger audience. He emphasizes that it’s okay if something isn’t to everyone’s taste; not everything will appeal to all people.
Predicting this is a bit risky, and it might not prove to be accurate. While some point to how the prequel Star Wars films eventually gained a following, that’s not quite the same situation. George Lucas had a very specific, unique vision for those films, which is a crucial difference.
The Authority of George Lucas
When the Star Wars prequels first came out, many fans didn’t like them, but some well-known critics did. Roger Ebert, a famous film critic, gave The Phantom Menace three and a half out of four stars, largely because of its impressive visual effects. He also said that, even within the established Star Wars universe, George Lucas told a compelling story.

George Lucas had a very specific idea for the prequel films, and whether you loved them or not, that consistent vision sets them apart from other Star Wars stories. Many people who were kids when the prequels came out really enjoyed them, and that fondness has continued, with those fans now sharing them with their own children. However, today’s younger viewers don’t seem to feel the same way about Disney’s sequel trilogy.
Disney Distancing Itself
Disney appears to be shifting its focus away from the sequel trilogy and back to the original Star Wars films. At the Galaxy’s Edge theme park, they’re reducing the emphasis on the sequels. While some new projects involving sequel characters like Rey were mentioned, there haven’t been any updates on them. Additionally, Disney leadership decided against moving forward with a project called The Hunt for Ben Solo, even though the team at Lucasfilm supported it.

It’s been ten years since The Force Awakens came out, and it hasn’t sparked much nostalgic fondness yet. Many fans don’t think that will change even after another ten years. It seems unlikely the sequels will ever be as popular as the prequels, considering their declining influence on popular culture.
