History The baseball community has its eyes on Christopher Jackson.
When Major League Baseball’s season began on March 26th, fans of the New York Mets were surprised when the performer of the national anthem stumbled over the lyrics before their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
While singing the song, Christopher skipped the line “O’er the ramparts we watched,” and instead sang “Whose broad stripes and bright stars” again.
Because of his years on stage, the Tony Award nominee quickly recovered from the mistake and seamlessly continued to the line, ‘were so gallantly streaming,’ finishing the song perfectly after that.
Some Mets fans noticed the amusing irony: the actor who first played George Washington in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical was now experiencing this unfortunate situation, and they couldn’t help but feel it was bad luck.
Okay, so I’m totally freaking out! Someone on X said it best – seeing George Washington, from Hamilton of all things, butcher the National Anthem at the Mets opening game? It just feels like a terrible sign for the whole season. Seriously, it’s like the universe is telling us things are going to go wrong, and I’m already stressed!
One viewer pointed out, “It’s pretty ironic to stumble on the national anthem when you’re known for playing George Washington!”
Christopher isn’t the only performer whose national anthem performance has gotten attention. Back in 2011, Christina Aguilera famously forgot a line of the song while singing it at the Super Bowl.

Additionally, Fergie faced a lot of backlash for her jazzy performance of the Star-Spangled Banner at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.
Okay, so, everyone’s been talking about my performance of the anthem last night, and honestly, it’s just… I always feel so incredibly lucky to even get to sing it. I really wanted to do something different for the NBA, you know? I’m an artist, I like to push boundaries and try new things, but looking back, it just didn’t land the way I hoped. I swear, I love this country so much and I truly gave it my all, I really did!
