A fourth Mummy movie is in the works, and it’s bringing back familiar faces! Universal Pictures is planning a highly anticipated sequel that will reunite Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. With these two Academy Award winners confirmed to return, fans are now wondering if other beloved cast members like Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velásquez, and Oded Fehr will also be joining the adventure.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Hannah will be back as Jonathan Carnahan in the fourth Mummy movie. Hannah first appeared as Evelyn’s older brother – a skilled thief – in The Mummy and returned for both The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008). He’s also well-known for his roles in films like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors, and The Hurricane, and on TV shows such as Spartacus and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence, will direct the next Mummy film, taking over from Stephen Sommers who directed the first two. The duo have a strong background in horror, having directed films like Ready or Not, Scream (2022 and Scream VI), and Abigail. David Coggeshall, who wrote Orphan: First Kill, is writing the screenplay for The Mummy 4. The filmmakers have indicated that this new installment will not follow the storyline of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, largely because that film featured a different actress (Maria Bello) in Rachel Weisz’s role.
Universal Pictures has announced that the fourth Mummy movie will hit theaters on May 19, 2028 – almost 29 years after the original film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. This new installment will also be 20 years since Fraser last played his character, Rick O’Connell, in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The announcement came alongside a special 25th-anniversary re-release of The Mummy Returns in cinemas, and confirms John Hannah will be returning for the fourth film.
Universal Pictures stopped making its traditional Mummy movies in the early 2010s to start fresh with a new film. The idea was to create a shared universe, similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with the 2017 film The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alex Kurtzman. This new series, intended to be called The Dark Universe, leaned more towards action than classic monster movies. Unfortunately, the 2017 The Mummy was not successful with either critics or audiences.
Universal Pictures moved away from the idea of a connected universe for its classic monsters and began telling individual stories instead. This led to fresh takes on iconic creatures like the Invisible Man and the Wolf Man, produced by Blumhouse. In 2023, we saw two different Dracula stories with films like Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and now a new sequel to The Mummy is in the works. With fond memories of the original Mummy movies and the recent Oscar wins by stars Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who both appeared in those films, The Mummy 4 is generating a lot of excitement.
