The series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is adding new layers to the Monsterverse, and episode 5 introduces a surprising development for the whole franchise. It’s been established that certain people can form connections with the Titans – like Jia and Kong – but the nature of these bonds has remained a mystery. Fans have speculated about everything from how sound might play a role to whether genetics are involved.
The Monsterverse series, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, is now largely exploring how humans and Titans can coexist. The leaders at Apex think Titans can be controlled, which brings up the important issue of who should be in charge. Other characters in the show have very different opinions, and Cate Randa, played by Anna Sawai, is quickly becoming a key player in the story.
Cate Has a Connection With Multiple Titans
Cate Randa has a past connection to Godzilla. She lived through his attack on San Francisco, and the first season of Monarch suggested a possible, almost empathetic link between them. There were several instances where Godzilla and Cate seemed to make eye contact, with Godzilla appearing to recognize her. Cate’s reactions were complex – she seemed both shocked and amazed, as if Godzilla stirred something deep within her.
In Season 2, Episode 5 of Monarch, a fascinating new element appears. The season introduces Co’cai, a mysterious rival to Godzilla, who is revered as a god by certain South American tribes. It seems Co’cai is inspired by the legendary Kraken, and Cate accidentally freed it from the Axis Mundi. The episode reveals a strange connection between Cate and this Titan; she feels drawn to Co’cai, and surprisingly, it responds in kind, showing a similar interest. It’s clear they share a unique bond.
This initially appears similar to what we’ve seen before with Jia, but Cate is different. She’s connected with two Titans, proving she possesses a unique ability – possibly something mystical or genetic – that draws them to her. If Cate can connect with multiple Titans, it suggests others might be able to as well, meaning humans and Titans could potentially coexist peacefully. Cate is therefore central to the future of the Monsterverse.
Cate Appears Sensitive to the Titans’ Calls

It’s still unclear how Cate is connected to the Titans. However, the fourth episode of Monarch Season 2 suggests it might involve sound. Cate appears to be unusually sensitive to the noises made by Co’cao, also known as Titan X. In the episode, while intoxicated, Cate put her head underwater near San Francisco and experienced a strange connection to something. She described it as “the song of the sea,” but it’s implied she was actually hearing the Titan.
However, there was a twist. The episode first implied Co’cao was close to San Francisco, but that turned out to be incorrect. Monarch had been fooled by Apex, and the creature was actually far out at sea near Chile. This means Cate was somehow communicating with Titan X from thousands of kilometers away. Interestingly, this communication happened through sound waves, which supports the idea that some people are sensitive to Titan sounds – a concept known as the “bioacoustic” theory. Considering how this connection seems to work, it’s likely Cate’s ability to connect with Titans is inherited – it runs in her family.
Sound plays a crucial role for Co’cao, the Titan. He has a unique connection with scarab creatures, and seems to locate their breeding grounds by sensing the sounds they make in the water. This leads him to islands like Santa Soledad. Cate appears to be utilizing this same connection, and it extends beyond Co’cao, linking her to Godzilla as well. While the use of sound will likely be explored further in Godzilla Vs. Kong, Cate’s ability suggests a much deeper mystery – and positions her for a significant role in the future of the Monsterverse.
