Following the success of his Oscar-winning film Sinners, Ryan Coogler is set to write and direct a new version of the classic sci-fi series, The X-Files. Hulu has ordered a pilot episode, and Coogler has shared that his reboot will stay true to the original by including both standalone monster episodes and a larger, season-long conspiracy storyline.
Even though this news is exciting, it’s still worrying considering Hulu recently canceled a reboot of a popular fantasy series. Just earlier this month, they unexpectedly canceled a new version of Buffy that was being directed by Chloë Zhao, the filmmaker behind award-winning movies like Nomadland and Hamnet.
Ryan Coogler is facing a lot of expectations, but recent developments are encouraging. He’s working again with Francine Maisler, the casting director from his earlier film Sinners, on the X-Files reboot, and a strong new actor has just joined the cast.
The Addition Of Himesh Patel To The X-Files Reboot Is Very Exciting
Himesh Patel is set to star in the new X-Files series. He’s known for his leading role in the film Yesterday, directed by Danny Boyle, and has also appeared in Don’t Look Up and Christopher Nolan’s Tenet. Interestingly, he’s working with Nolan again on a movie based on The Odyssey.
Patel is well-known for his role in the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Station Eleven. This sci-fi show follows a group of actors who travel the world performing after a devastating pandemic. Patel plays Jeevan Chaudhary, who protects a young girl named Kirsten, and his performance was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award.
Given his strong work in other films, Patel seems like a great choice for the X-Files reboot. His acting style fits well with the idea of him playing the believer-type FBI agent, similar to Mulder. Patel’s ability to play relatable, genuine characters will also offer a fresh dynamic alongside a potential partner, and avoid simply recreating Duchovny’s famously sarcastic portrayal.
Himesh Patel & Danielle Deadwyler Are Worthy Replacements For The Original Leads
I’m so excited about Ryan Coogler’s new take on The X-Files! While Himesh Patel is involved, I just learned that the incredibly talented Danielle Deadwyler – you might know her from Till or The Piano Lesson – will be playing the lead female role. It’s awesome because she and Himesh actually worked together on Station Eleven before, so there’s already a connection there. I think they’re going to be fantastic together!
| The X-Files Reboot Cast’s Notable Roles | ||
|---|---|---|
| Title | Character | |
| Himesh Patel | Yesterday (2019) | Jack Malik |
| Tenet (2020) | Mahir | |
| Don’t Look Up (2021) | Phillip | |
| Station Eleven (2021-2022) | Jeevan Chaudhary | |
| Danielle Deadwyler | Till (2022) | Mamie Till-Mobley |
| The Piano Lesson (2024) | Berniece | |
| Station Eleven (2021-2022) | Miranda Carroll | |
| Rooster (2026-present) | Dylan Shepherd |
Even though Mackenzie Davis and Himesh Patel weren’t in scenes together on Station Eleven, their shared involvement shows they both have excellent taste in television and can lead a science fiction show. Plus, Ayo Edebiri’s great on-screen connection with Steve Carell in the new HBO comedy Rooster suggests she’ll have strong chemistry with Patel, as he also plays a down-to-earth and likeable character, much like Carell.
As a huge film fan, I’m already excited about this reboot! Not only are the leads, Patel and Deadwyler, incredibly talented, but Gillian Anderson – the original Agent Scully! – has given it her blessing. She read the script from Coogler and apparently called it “fking cool,” which, let’s be honest, is the highest praise you could ask for. If she thinks it’s good, I’m definitely in!
What’s really encouraging about the new X-Files is creator Chris Carter’s description of it as “different” and “special.” Revivals often fail if they simply rehash old ideas, which would be a waste of the talents of actors Shivani Patel and Reagan Deadwyler. With Ryan Coogler directing, hopefully their performances will stand out, and this version of The X-Files will avoid the pitfalls of the Buffy revival.
