John Hannah Will Return in ‘The Mummy 4’ Alongside Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz

I’m so excited about the new Mummy movie! It feels like a real family reunion, with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz coming back as Rick and Evelyn O’Connell. Seriously, having those two back is huge! Everyone’s been hoping other familiar faces from the earlier films, like Arnold Vosloo, Patricia Velásquez, and Oded Fehr, might join them too, and it’s making the anticipation even greater. It’s shaping up to be one of the legacy sequels I’m most looking forward to!

Okay, this is exciting news for a fan like me! The Hollywood Reporter just announced that John Hannah is coming back to play Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy 4. For those who might not remember, he was Evelyn’s charming, roguish older brother and a seriously skilled thief in the first two Mummy films – I loved his energy! He was also in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, so it’s great to see him revisiting the role. Beyond that, he’s been in a ton of other things I enjoy, like Four Weddings and a Funeral, Sliding Doors, and even heavier stuff like The Hurricane. And if you’re a TV person, you probably know him from Spartacus and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – a really versatile actor!

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known collectively as Radio Silence, will direct the next Mummy film, taking over from Stephen Sommers who directed the first two. The directing duo are experienced in the horror genre, having previously made films like Ready or Not, Scream (2022 and Scream VI), and Abigail. David Coggeshall, who wrote Orphan: First Kill, is writing the script for The Mummy 4. The new film will reportedly disregard the plot of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor due to the recasting of Rachel Weisz with Maria Bello in that installment.

Universal Pictures has announced that the fourth Mummy movie will hit theaters on May 19, 2028—nearly 29 years after Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz starred in the original Mummy film. This sequel will also be 20 years since Fraser last played the character Rick O’Connell in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. The announcement of John Hannah reprising his role came alongside a 25th-anniversary re-release of The Mummy Returns in cinemas.

Universal Pictures stopped making the traditional Mummy movies in the early 2010s, deciding instead to start over with a new film that could kick off a larger, interconnected universe of monster movies. That film, 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and directed by Alex Kurtzman, was meant to be the beginning of ‘The Dark Universe,’ a series of action-packed monster films. However, the movie was not well-received by critics or audiences and failed at the box office.

As a big horror fan, I was initially excited when Universal talked about building a whole shared universe around their classic monsters. But they’ve shifted gears, and honestly, I’m glad they have! Now they’re focusing on telling individual, fresh stories. We’ve already seen fantastic reimaginings like Blumhouse’s The Invisible Man and The Wolf Man, and 2023 gave us two really different takes on Dracula with Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. Now, they’re bringing back The Mummy! The first two Mummy movies have a lot of love from people who grew up with them, and it’s amazing to see Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz both having huge career moments after being part of those films. The Mummy 4 is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated horror movies for me!
