Starting in 1939, inspired by the popularity of DC’s early superheroes, Marvel Comics quickly became a leading creator of iconic heroes and villains. This success ultimately led to the creation of the hugely popular Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel rose to prominence during the “Silver Age” of comics and has remained a dominant force in the industry ever since, publishing countless series, some of which have become truly legendary and helped shape the company’s identity.
As a longtime comics reader, I’ve noticed Marvel loves to constantly reboot its titles, but what often gets lost is just how long some of these characters have actually been around! When you add up all the different volumes, some of these series have incredible staying power. We’re talking about the biggest names in Marvel history, and these ten titles represent the longest-running examples of truly fantastic superhero storytelling.
10) Wolverine – 403 Issues

Wolverine is widely considered one of the greatest comic book characters, and he’s appeared in a huge number of his own titles. Starting in 1989, he’s headlined eight separate comic series totaling 403 issues. As is common with long-running heroes, his earlier series had more issues than recent ones. Despite debuting relatively recently in 1974, Wolverine is one of the youngest characters on this list. Marvel has occasionally jumped the numbering—publishing issues #900 and #1000—likely to match the higher numbers of DC Comics’ longer-running series. However, his incredible popularity has cemented his place as one of the most published superheroes of all time.
9) Invincible Iron Man – 683 Issues

As a comic book and movie fan, I’ve always been a little bothered by the idea that Iron Man wasn’t a big deal before Robert Downey Jr. took on the role. It’s just not true! While the Marvel Cinematic Universe definitely boosted his popularity, Iron Man has a long and impressive history in the comics. His series, originally called Invincible Iron Man, has actually run for a whopping 683 issues over seven different volumes! It hasn’t always been a top seller, but over the years, the books have built up a really dedicated following and a legendary status all their own.
8) Daredevil – 687 Issues

As a longtime comic fan, I have to say Daredevil is a title that consistently delivers. It’s got a fantastic history, even if the most recent run didn’t quite hit the mark. Think about it – 687 issues across eight different volumes, and another one is already on the way! What really sets Daredevil apart is the incredible creative talent that’s worked on it over the years. Seriously, names like Frank Miller, Ann Nocenti, David Mazzucchelli, John Romita Jr., Kevin Smith, and so many others have given us some truly unforgettable stories starring Matt Murdock. It’s been an amazing journey for fans, and it’s easily one of Marvel’s most respected and well-crafted books.
7) Uncanny X-Men

For nearly thirty years, Uncanny X-Men was one of the most popular comic books available. It originally launched as X-Men, running for 66 issues before becoming a reprint. The series was then revitalized with Giant-Size X-Men #1, which led to the Uncanny X-Men title and, eventually, seven different volumes totaling 725 issues. Notably, this series features the longest continuous creative run in Marvel history, with writer Chris Claremont contributing to the team for over 20 years across multiple stretches. Considered the definitive mutant comic, Uncanny X-Men remains the strongest X-Men title currently being published.
6) Fantastic Four – 731 Issues

The Fantastic Four is a cornerstone of Marvel Comics history. In the 1950s, Marvel temporarily stopped publishing superhero comics, focusing instead on genres like Westerns, science fiction, horror, and romance. DC Comics brought superheroes back into popularity with Showcase #4 in 1956, marking the start of the Silver Age. The success of Justice League of America in 1960 then paved the way for Fantastic Four in 1961, the first collaboration between Jack Kirby and Stan Lee. The series has continued through seven different volumes, reaching over 731 issues and is still being published today. While it’s experienced its share of challenges, the Fantastic Four remains one of the greatest comic books ever made.
5) Captain America – 781 Issues

Despite being one of the earliest superhero comics, appearing in 1941 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, Captain America isn’t the longest-running. It’s reached 781 issues across 14 different series (or ‘volumes’). Originally titled Captain America Comics, it briefly became Captain America’s Weird Tales before settling on Captain America. It’s been consistently popular for decades and is considered one of Marvel’s best titles, though it’s also been rebooted more times than any other on this list.
4) The Mighty Thor – 793

Thor is one of Marvel’s most popular and long-running heroes. His comic book, The Mighty Thor, has a rich history, starting with its debut in Journey Into Mystery #83. It continued in that title until issue #125, then became The Mighty Thor with issue #126. Since then, there have been seven different series, including The Immortal Thor. While Mortal Thor wasn’t numbered as part of the main series, the overall run has spanned 793 issues, seamlessly blending science fiction and fantasy for readers.
3) Avengers – 802 Issues

The Avengers are incredibly popular today, largely thanks to the movies, but they’ve actually been a cornerstone of Marvel Comics for decades. Originally created in 1963 as Marvel’s answer to the Justice League, the team has consistently brought together the most iconic heroes in the Marvel Universe. Over the years, there have been nine different series of Avengers comics, totaling 802 issues, and a new version is planned. While sales have fluctuated – sometimes it’s a bestseller, other times not – the comic has been continuously available for the past 63 years.
2) The Incredible Hulk – 811 Issues

The Hulk is a hugely popular Marvel hero and one of their most frequently published characters. The Incredible Hulk first appeared in the Silver Age and has a unique publication journey. It originally launched in 1962, but was cancelled after just six issues. The Hulk then moved to Tales to Astonish, which was later renamed The Incredible Hulk starting with issue #102. Over the years, there have been six different series of the book, including The Immortal Hulk (though it doesn’t seem the current The Infernal Hulk follows that pattern). So far, The Incredible Hulk has run for a total of 811 issues, proving the Hulk is truly the strongest one there is – especially when it comes to comic book sales.
1) The Amazing Spider-Man – 988 Issues

Spider-Man is Marvel’s most iconic character, so it makes sense that The Amazing Spider-Man is their longest-running comic series. It began in 1963, shortly after Spider-Man’s debut in Amazing Fantasy #15. While Marvel has published issues labeled #1000 for both Marvel Comics and Amazing Fantasy, neither series actually reached that number – it was more about keeping up with the Joneses! With nine different iterations of the series, The Amazing Spider-Man is approaching its 1000th issue, currently at 988. It achieved this impressive run by publishing as many as three issues each month for extended periods, making it the longest-running title in Marvel’s history.
