After discovering the Emperor—Chagum’s father—wants to harm his son, she agrees to help Chagum’s mother protect him. Throughout their travels, the secrets of Chagum’s past and a dangerous prophecy that could destroy the kingdom are revealed.

I’m completely hooked on this amazing fantasy story! It’s set in a really cool alternate version of Japan, ruled by seven incredibly powerful Kings. Each King has these unique supernatural abilities and shares them with their own clan – it’s a whole system of power! The story follows Yashiro Isana, a sweet and smart high schooler, and things go sideways fast when he’s wrongly accused of killing someone important from the Red Clan, HOMRA. Suddenly, everyone’s after him, and it’s a total whirlwind!

Furthermore, Yashiro doesn’t remember the events that led people to believe he committed murder. As the story unfolds, the mystery surrounding who he really is begins to be revealed.

8) Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic

This series is adapted from the popular manga by Shinobu Ohtaka and is known for its imaginative world, compelling story, and memorable characters. It follows Aladdin, a young magician traveling the world on a journey of self-discovery.

The title is reserved for exceptionally powerful magicians who can alter reality itself. Alongside his companions – Ugo, a powerful djinn, and Alibaba Saluja, a mysterious boy – Aladdin presses on with his incredible adventure, gradually uncovering the secrets of his past and his destiny.

I’m totally hooked on this story! It centers around Rikuo Nura, who seems like a normal middle schooler, but get this – he’s actually part yokai! He’s destined to lead his grandfather’s incredibly famous yokai clan, the Nura Clan. At first, he really doesn’t want anything to do with it, but he quickly realizes he has to embrace his powers and protect people. It’s a really cool setup!

6) The Heroic Legend of Arslan

This often-overlooked anime is based on a well-known historical novel from 1986. It first aired in 2015, with a second season following in 2016. However, the anime didn’t cover the entire story. The series is inspired by the history and myths of Persia, and specifically tells the story of Arsames, a Persian prince.

I’m totally hooked on this story! It centers around Arslan, a prince who’s fighting to win back his kingdom, Parsa. His dad was defeated by this really intense, religiously driven army called the Lusitanians, and now Arslan’s on this epic journey with a small group of loyal friends to reclaim what’s rightfully his and rescue his father. It’s a classic underdog story!

5) Dororo

Inspired by Osamu Tezuka’s 1967 manga, Dororo is a fresh take on the 1969 anime series, Dororo to Hyakkimaru. The story centers on Hyakkimaru, a character facing incredible hardship as he fights for his very survival. He was born without essential body parts – limbs, a nose, eyes, ears, or skin – because his father, a powerful samurai lord, offered him as a sacrifice to twelve demons, but somehow, he endures.

A generous inventor of prosthetics and weapons rescued him as a child, giving him a chance to grow up. Now, he’s on a quest to vanquish demons and recover everything that was taken from him.

4) Yatagarasu: The Raven Does Not Choose Its Master

This fantasy novel blends history with magic, telling a story of self-discovery and political schemes in a world where individuals can shapeshift into three-legged crow spirits called yatagarasu.

The story follows Asebi, a young woman competing to become the crown princess, and the crown prince as he battles to maintain his position within his clan.

3) Ajin: Demi-Human

This exciting action-fantasy series dives into what it truly means to be human, focusing on themes of prejudice and what defines humanity. Seventeen years ago, the discovery of ‘Ajin’ – people who cannot die – in Africa led to widespread fear, as they were quickly seen as a danger to the rest of the world.

I’m absolutely fascinated by the story of Ajin! It’s heartbreaking to think about these people with incredible abilities being hunted down and treated horribly just for being different. The main character, Kei Nagai, really gets thrown for a loop when he dies in an accident and comes back to life as one of these Ajin. It’s a tough adjustment for him, but what’s really interesting is how he discovers that the line between humans and Ajin isn’t as clear-cut as everyone believes.

2) Claymore

Claymore is a truly excellent but often overlooked anime. It stands out with its mature storytelling, a strong and complicated female protagonist, and a richly developed world. The series centers on Clare, a unique character created as a hybrid of human and youma—powerful, shapeshifting demons who prey on humans.

Clare meets Raki, a boy exiled from his village after a tragic attack that killed his family. With nowhere to go, he joins Clare on her quest for revenge against the creature who harmed someone she loved. The anime series, produced by Madhouse and released in 2007, unfortunately never received a complete ending or continued with a second season.

This dark fantasy story takes place in a world where, long ago, certain individuals were blessed with the ability to use powerful, holy objects called the “Innocence.” These objects were used to destroy the Akuma – artificial monsters created by a villain known as the Millennium Earl.
