Crunchyroll, a popular anime streaming service that started in 2017, has quickly become the largest platform for watching anime worldwide. It offers a huge selection of series, with new episodes and shows added every week. Each season, Crunchyroll announces its upcoming anime releases, including when subtitled and dubbed versions will be available. Because of its extensive library, Crunchyroll is a go-to source for anime fans looking to discover and enjoy more shows.
Recently, Crunchyroll unexpectedly removed Hunter x Hunter without any explanation, which is typical for them. The 2011 anime series, created by Madhouse, is widely considered a classic among Shonen Jump adaptations. Crunchyroll hasn’t said why it removed the show, but it’s likely due to problems with the licensing agreement or potentially lower-than-expected viewership, even though the story itself is very popular.
Where to Watch Hunter x Hunter Now?
Even though the anime is no longer on Crunchyroll, you can still watch all 148 episodes on Netflix, Hulu, and Tubi. These episodes cover the popular Chimera Ant Arc from the original manga, which aired from 2011 to 2014. Before this version, another anime adaptation of Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga was created by Nippon Animation in 1999. That series only had 63 episodes and covered a smaller portion of the manga’s story.
Hunter x Hunter Is Long Overdue For an Anime Sequel
For over twenty years, the creator of the manga has struggled with serious health problems, making it difficult for him to continue working. This has led to numerous and lengthy breaks in the manga’s publication. Consequently, the anime adaptation has also been affected, constantly facing a shortage of source material. The anime hasn’t had a new season since 2011, and fans are still waiting for its return.
After the Chimera Ant story arc, the manga began the 13th Hunter Chairman Arc, a relatively short arc of just 21 chapters. The Succession Contest Arc started in December 2012 and has been running ever since, with over 70 chapters released so far. Because of frequent breaks in production, the arc is still unfinished. Fortunately, the publisher, Shueisha, has been understanding of the author’s pace, allowing him to work on the story without feeling pressured to finish quickly.
The manga resumed publication with 10 new chapters in December 2024, and the author is continuing the story, suggesting more releases are planned for this year. Even though the Succession Contest Arc is still in progress, there’s currently enough material for at least two short anime seasons. As of now, 38 volumes have been published, and all chapters can be read on the Manga Plus app and Viz Media’s official website.
