Adapting a book into a movie is often a tricky situation for filmmakers. While existing fans can be a great starting point, those same fans often have very specific ideas about how the story, characters, and world should look and feel on screen. They can be particularly critical of any changes or omissions. Unfortunately, many adaptations fall flat with these audiences, which can lead to poor box office results – a prime example being the decision to turn The Hobbit into a three-part movie series.
Of course, there are always exceptions. The Harry Potter films were hugely successful, though it remains to be seen if the new HBO show will achieve the same popularity. Interestingly, while many fans were disappointed with The Hobbit movie, the original Lord of the Rings trilogy is still considered one of the greatest book-to-film adaptations ever made. When Lionsgate decided to adapt Suzanne Collins’ wildly popular Hunger Games books for the big screen, they clearly hoped for Harry Potter or *Lord of the Ringslevel success – and, after 14 years, it’s obvious they achieved it.
The Hunger Games Hit Theaters On March 23, 2012

When Suzanne Collins started writing her young adult dystopian novels featuring children fighting to the death as a government-mandated spectacle, many doubted they could be adapted into films. While teens reading about such intense violence was one thing, the thought of audiences watching it unfold – even something as graphic as the death of a 12-year-old character like Rue – seemed unbelievable. However, The Hunger Games premiered on March 23, 2012, and quickly became a box office hit.
The first Hunger Games film earned an incredible $694 million globally, but the entire series – now five films strong, with another on the way – has made over $3.3 billion worldwide. This success goes beyond just dedicated book fans; the movies have clearly resonated with a broad audience, which requires strong stories and talented actors. Fortunately, the Hunger Games franchise has consistently delivered on both fronts.
The Franchise Has Only Improved With Time

Following the release of The Hunger Games in March 2012, four more films were made. These included adaptations of the original three books, and the final book, Mockingjay, was divided into two movies. Lionsgate took a risk by splitting the last book, but it proved successful. Despite some initial complaints about a two-part finale, Mockingjay – Part 1 earned over $755 million globally, and Mockingjay – Part 2 also performed strongly with $653 million worldwide.
Years after the original series, Suzanne Collins released a prequel novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which explored the 10th Hunger Games and the younger years of President Snow – revealing him to be as unsettling as ever. Adapted into a film in 2023, the movie earned $347 million worldwide and was generally considered a success, especially among fans. But the story doesn’t end there – Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate are already working on another new movie installment.
The New Hunger Games Installment Is Arriving Later This Year

After witnessing the tragic deaths of Prim and Wovey, readers can now delve into Haymitch Abernathy’s story in Sunrise on the Reaping. This book details Haymitch’s own Hunger Games experience – the 50th Annual, or Second Quarter Quell – which featured twice as many tributes as usual, bringing the total to fifty.
Haymitch’s story is particularly dark because President Snow personally inflicted terrible punishments on him after his victory. Despite the grim details, fans are excited about the upcoming book, set to release on March 18, 2025, and the movie, following on November 20, 2026. The buzz is building thanks to the impressive cast of Sunrise on the Reaping, and also because The Hunger Games remains incredibly popular. Fourteen years after the original film, the franchise is still thriving, and its impact continues to grow.
