Daredevil is widely considered one of Netflix’s strongest shows, and here’s the story behind its cancellation and eventual revival by Disney. While other Marvel series like Iron Man, Captain America, and Spider-Man are generally lighter in tone, Daredevil stands out for being much darker and more mature. It tackles complex issues, features intense action, and explores Matt Murdock’s personal struggles with his Catholic beliefs. This distinctive style was key to the show’s success, making its cancellation after three seasons particularly upsetting to fans.
Good news for fans: Daredevil is back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The new series, Daredevil: Born Again, picks up where the popular Netflix show left off, continuing many of the same storylines from its original three seasons. With season 2 now available, it’s clear Marvel is dedicated to continuing the adventures of Matt Murdock, Wilson Fisk, and the rest of the characters. If you’re a new fan, you might not know the complicated history of how the show was cancelled and then brought back – so here’s the full story.
Daredevil Was Cancelled Due To A Feud Between Netflix & Disney/Marvel

Netflix’s Daredevil kicked off a shared storyline featuring heroes like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, collectively known as The Defenders. Though Daredevil received consistently positive reviews over its three seasons, it was unexpectedly canceled on November 29, 2018, along with the other Marvel shows on Netflix. This left fans worried they wouldn’t see Charlie Cox reprise his role as Matt Murdock.
The cancellation of Daredevil after its third season wasn’t the initial intention. The creators had already mapped out storylines for seasons four and five. Season four would have focused on the character Typhoid Mary, who first appeared in season two of Iron Fist. Season five was intended to bring back Benjamin Pointdexter as Bullseye, continuing the narrative from the end of season three. Sadly, these planned seasons never came to fruition, and the show was ultimately cancelled.
There was a lot of speculation about why Daredevil was canceled. Many people thought Marvel decided to end the show because they planned to create their own series for Disney+ and move their content to their streaming service. However, it turned out that Netflix was actually the one who chose to cancel Daredevil.
While Netflix never gave a definitive reason for cancelling Daredevil, several issues likely contributed to the decision. One key disagreement was over the length of future seasons – Netflix preferred 10 episodes, while Marvel wanted to stick with 13 (according to Deadline). Additionally, Netflix realized that the Daredevil series continued to attract new subscribers even without new seasons. Over time, Netflix also shifted its focus to producing more original content, reducing its reliance on shows owned by other companies like Disney. These factors likely played a role in the eventual end of Netflix’s Defenders series.
Daredevil’s Popularity Meant His Return To The MCU Was Inevitable

Because of an agreement between Netflix and Marvel, characters from the Netflix Marvel shows couldn’t appear in other Marvel movies or TV shows for two years after their shows ended (according to The Hollywood Reporter). So, when Daredevil was cancelled in late 2018, Marvel had to wait until at least late 2020 before using the character again. Marvel was aware that Daredevil was popular, and fans expected the character wouldn’t stay sidelined in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for long.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe quickly brought back characters like Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. Murdock appeared in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and later in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022) and Echo (2024). Fisk was the villain in 2021’s Hawkeye and had an even larger part in Echo. These appearances made it clear to fans that a Daredevil series was coming.
After being announced in July 2022 and years in the making, the first season of Daredevil: Born Again arrived on Disney+ in March 2025. The revival felt like a continuation of the original Daredevil series, fully restoring the character’s iconic status. With season 2 now available, it’s clear Matt Murdock isn’t going anywhere – a welcome sign for fans who have been waiting a long time.
