This weekend, Love Story is seducing audiences more than Daredevil: Born Again.
As a huge Marvel fan, I was really excited for the return of Daredevil: Born Again on March 24th, and it definitely delivered! It quickly became the most-watched show on Disney+ that day. But it had some stiff competition just a couple of days later when the finale of Ryan Murphy’s Love Story dropped. That series followed the sweet romance between Carolyn Bessette and John F. Kennedy Jr., played by Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly, and people were clearly tuning in to see how their story ended.
Despite its controversial ending—which portrays the tragic 1999 plane crash that took the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren—the documentary Love Story is currently very popular on streaming services. According to data from FlixPatrol, which tracks streaming performance, Love Story recently reached the top spot on Disney+’s global chart, surpassing Daredevil and moving the superhero series into second place as of March 28.
These two series are performing very well, ranking higher than several other popular shows. They’ve surpassed the current seasons of Scrubs (No. 4), Paradise (No. 3), and High Potential (No. 6), as well as long-running hits like Grey’s Anatomy (No. 8) and Desperate Housewives (No. 9).
Although Love Story has become a global hit and propelled the series to the top of many charts, it isn’t number one everywhere. According to daily rankings from FlixPatrol that combine both shows and movies on Disney+, Love Story is performing better in countries like Spain, Italy, and Australia. However, Daredevil: Born Again remains more popular in several other regions, including Canada, Brazil, and the United Kingdom.
Below, see a breakdown of the shows’ chart performance in the aforementioned regions:
| Region | Love Story | Daredevil |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | No. 3 | No. 7 |
| Brazil | No. 7 | No. 4 |
| Canada | No. 7 | No. 3 |
| Finland | No. 3 | No. 5 |
| France | No. 4 | No. 5 |
| Hungary | No. 4 | No. 5 |
| Iceland | No. 3 | No. 5 |
| Ireland | No. 9 | No. 4 |
| Italy | No. 3 | No. 4 |
| Monaco | No. 4 | No. 5 |
| New Zealand | No. 3 | No. 10 |
| Norway | No. 3 | No. 6 |
| San Marino | No. 4 | No. 3 |
| Spain | No. 3 | No. 4 |
| United Kingdom | No. 9 | No. 4 |
It’s difficult to compare the popularity of Daredevil: Born Again and Love Story using a single regional chart for the US. Daredevil: Born Again is currently the third most popular show on Disney+, while Love Story is second on Hulu. Although Hulu is planned to merge fully into Disney+ by the end of the year, the two services are still separate right now.
Despite some mixed reactions to the ending of Love Story, it’s not surprising that it’s become more popular than the second season of Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again. Daredevil has only released one episode so far, while the conclusion of Love Story has likely prompted viewers to watch the earlier episodes and finish the series.
It’s very likely that Daredevil: Born Again will soon climb higher on the charts than Love Story. This is expected to happen when episodes 2 and 3 are released at the same time on March 31st, which should significantly increase the number of viewers. Even so, Love Story will almost definitely drop out of the Top 5 well before Daredevil finishes its second season on May 5th.
