Edric’s ‘Dune 3’ Absence Means Denis Villeneuve Still Won’t Fix the Worst Book Change

Warning: Includes MINOR SPOILERS from Dune Messiah!

As a huge fan of Frank Herbert’s Dune, I can tell you the books are famously complex! The story follows Paul Atreides – Timothée Chalamet plays him in Denis Villeneuve‘s films – and it’s incredible to watch him transform from the son of a noble family into the emperor of everything. Along the way, he encounters so many fascinating groups – the Fremen who live in the desert, the mysterious Bene Gesserit sisterhood, the Mentats who are basically human computers, and the truly awful House Harkonnen. There’s sandworm riding, encounters with babies who are unbelievably advanced, and learning about the Spice Melange, which can give you the power to see the future. And if you thought that was a lot, the upcoming Dune: Part Three is going to add even more to the mix, like the Bene Tleilax, who can literally change their faces!

Robert Pattinson will join the cast of Dune: Part Three as Scytale, a shapeshifting operative from the Tleilaxu who is plotting against Paul Atreides and his rule. The film is also expected to feature Charlotte Rampling as Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam and Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, both of whom are key players in the conspiracy as depicted in Frank Herbert’s novel Dune Messiah.

One key character from the book series is noticeably absent from the promotional materials and the first two movie adaptations: Edric, a representative of the Spacing Guild. This powerful organization controls all space travel and shipping within the empire, yet they’ve received very little attention in the films – barely a mention in Dune: Part One. This is a significant and frustrating departure from the source material, especially considering how well the movies otherwise capture the spirit of the books.

What Is the Spacing Guild and Why Is Their Absence Frustrating?

In the world of Dune, spaceships rely on “Holtzman engines” to warp space, enabling incredibly fast travel across vast distances. However, this process is only safe with a Guild Navigator present. These Navigators have consumed large amounts of the Spice Melange, granting them limited precognitive abilities necessary to safely chart a course through the perils of space.

Becoming a Guild Navigator physically changes a person. For example, Edric has mutated into a fish-like being and constantly floats in a tank of spice gas. It’s disappointing that the recent Dune films haven’t shown us any Navigators, as it would be fascinating to see director Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation of their appearance. Interestingly, David Lynch included a Navigator in his 1984 Dune film, and that memorable, strange creature is one of the reasons some fans still enjoy that otherwise flawed movie.

Leaving out the Spacing Guild creates a significant gap in the story’s world-building. In the novels, the Guild works for CHOAM, a huge company that manages all trade throughout the universe. Because they have complete control over travel and commerce, they are essential to the empire’s function. Removing them oversimplifies the story, which will likely disappoint fans of the books.

The films are already quite long – each one is over two and a half hours – so some cuts were inevitable. Director Denis Villeneuve and his team have chosen to remove the scenes involving the Guild Navigators.

The world of Dune is incredibly expansive and unusual, so these characters might appear in future installments – potentially in Dune films made after Denis Villeneuve steps down, or perhaps in the second season of the Dune: Prophecy series on HBO. For now, Dune: Part Three is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18, 2026.
