The often-discussed series Love Story, created by Ryan Murphy, has concluded with a sad finale, and Elizabeth Taylor’s life may be the subject of his next project.
The first season of Love Story chronicles the romance between Carolyn Bessette (Sarah Pidgeon) and John F. Kennedy Jr. (Paul Kelly), detailing how they became a highly publicized celebrity couple before their tragic deaths in 1999. Bessette was just 33 years old when she died, and the series offers a dramatized portrayal of her life as a Calvin Klein executive and her entry into the world of the Kennedy family.
Connor Hines, the creator of Love Story, discussed the heartbreaking season one finale with Variety and hinted at future seasons exploring other famous romances that people still talk about. When asked about potential subjects for upcoming episodes, Hines suggested, “Perhaps Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Their relationship had a lot of passion.”
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, famously known as “Liz and Dick,” had a famously dramatic love story in Hollywood. They met on the set of the 1963 film Cleopatra and became known for their extravagant lifestyle and passionate relationship, which attracted a lot of public attention. Their romance involved two marriages and several films together, but ultimately ended with Burton’s death in 1984. They first married in 1964, divorced in 1974, then briefly remarried in 1975 before divorcing again in 1976.
Their romance was even more controversial than that of Jackie Kennedy and John F. Kennedy Jr., as both were already married to other people when they began their affair, causing a worldwide scandal and disapproval from the Vatican. The couple famously starred in eleven films together, including classics like Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Taming of the Shrew, and The V.I.P.s. Despite the difficulties in their relationship, Elizabeth Taylor considered Richard Burton her greatest love, and she was buried with a letter from him.
Focusing season two of Love Story on the relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton would be a natural fit. The series appears to highlight iconic romances, even those marked by scandal or tragedy. Taylor sadly passed away on March 23, 2011, at age 79, with her four children by her side. She remains a beloved and celebrated icon of Hollywood’s golden age.
While Love Story hasn’t been officially renewed for a second season, it’s become the most-watched limited series ever on both Hulu and Disney+. Because of its popularity, another season is very likely.
