The creators of the popular Netflix show Stranger Things, known as the Duffer Brothers, have a new horror series out now that the final season of Stranger Things has finished. The new show is already doing well, quickly climbing to number four on Netflix’s most-watched list. However, its success is largely due to Haley Z. Boston, who wrote, directed, and runs the series – not just the Duffer Brothers’ involvement as producers.
Called Something Very Bad is Going to Happen, this series has a lot to live up to with such a dramatic title – and so far, it’s delivering. While the plot has a few confusing parts, critics are enjoying it more than general viewers. The story follows Rachel (Camila Morrone) as she gets increasingly anxious leading up to her wedding, especially during the final week. The strong performances from the cast, including Jennifer Jason Leigh and Adam DiMarco, really build the tension and create a creeping sense of horror.
It Boasts a Theme That Never Loses Relevance
The series has been well-received by critics, earning an 82% approval rating. It’s particularly noteworthy considering the story focuses on a woman’s anxieties and instincts about marriage and her partner. As critic Kristen Moldonado put it, while not flawless, the show is captivating enough to hold your attention. The core message – trusting your intuition – is powerfully delivered, and the show enhances this feeling through unsettling camera work and a gothic horror atmosphere, making viewers question both what they see and how they feel.
Although the series can sometimes feel overwhelming and confusing due to its complex plot, the central story of a woman’s pain and forced compliance consistently anchors the narrative. As Joe Botten from Loud and Clear Reviews puts it, while Carrie explores the horrors of a girl growing up and Rosemary’s Baby focuses on the terrifying side of motherhood, this series examines the frightening realities of becoming a wife.
