Even after 50 years, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is still considered the best shark movie ever made. Released in 1975, it essentially invented the modern summer blockbuster and sparked a trend of animal attack films trying to copy its success—a phenomenon known as the Jaws Effect. While films like Open Water and The Shallows are often praised as top shark movies since Jaws, a new horror film released on Hulu in 2025 is currently receiving more widespread positive feedback.
As a huge movie fan, especially when it comes to shark thrillers, I have to tell you about Dangerous Animals. It’s quickly become one of my favorites! Directed by Sean Byrne and starring Jai Courtney, it’s seriously good – critics on Rotten Tomatoes gave it an 87% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating, based on over 180 reviews, and audiences seem to love it too, with a 74% rating. It’s one of the best shark movies I’ve seen since Jaws, and honestly, it needs a sequel – though sadly, there’s no news about one yet. It landed on Hulu on March 28th, and it’s a really unique blend of a shark movie and a serial killer thriller. The story revolves around a surfer who gets kidnapped by a truly twisted boat captain. This guy runs an Australian shark-diving business, but it’s all a front for trapping tourists and… well, feeding them to the sharks. It’s dark, it’s thrilling, and it’s definitely a must-watch!
Dangerous Animals Is a Shark Classic in the Making
Okay, so I just saw Dangerous Animals, and honestly, I think it’s going to be one of those movies people are still talking about for years. It’s a really clever spin on the typical shark movie – think Wolf Creek meets Jaws, but with a twist. Instead of the sharks being the main villains, the people are the real threat, and the sharks are just…well, sharks! Alexis den Boggende from Boston Hassel called it a “memorable, nail-biting horror survival flick that makes you more afraid of man than anything that’s swimming around in the sea,” and Keri O’Shea at Warped Perspective really got it when she said the sharks are “just sharks.” It’s a genuinely fresh take on the genre.
Beyond simply avoiding the typical ‘shark attack’ story, Dangerous Animals is a thrilling ride. It expertly blends intense, quick-moving action with genuinely frightening psychological horror, keeping you constantly on edge. The film features a standout performance from Courtney as a disturbingly charming and cruel villain, and Hassie Harrison embodies the resilience of a ‘final girl’ perfectly. While the story focuses on the terror of being stranded at sea with a killer, the sharks themselves are still a very real and dangerous presence, with plenty of brutal action, realistic underwater scenes, and shocking moments that will stay with you.
Other Horror Movies Now on Hulu
Hulu is becoming a fantastic place to find scary movies! Recently, the film Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice started streaming on Hulu after premiering at SXSW. And to finish out March, the found footage horror film House on Eden will be available on March 31st. Hulu isn’t stopping there – throughout April, you can also stream films like Monster House, Primitive War, Shelby Oaks, and Good Boy.
