The conclusion of Spider-Man: No Way Home is considered one of the most moving scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. To protect the entire multiverse, Peter Parker makes the difficult decision to erase himself from everyone’s memory, asking Doctor Strange to cast a forgetting spell. He briefly thought about letting Ned and MJ remember him, but realized they would be happier and more successful at MIT if he remained a stranger. While initially he wanted to give his friends a better future, later events in the MCU proved his sacrifice was the right thing to do for many reasons.
After the events of No Way Home, Wilson Fisk successfully became the mayor of New York City. As shown in Daredevil: Born Again, he strongly opposes vigilantes and is determined to get rid of all costumed heroes. His police task force is operating aggressively throughout the city, not only going after vigilantes themselves, but also anyone who supports them. For example, the premiere of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 features a wanted poster for Karen Page, simply because she helped vigilantes. This makes Peter Parker’s choice to keep his identity a secret even more understandable.
Wilson Fisk Makes It Even More Dangerous for Peter Parker to Share His Secret With Others

The new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie takes place four years after the events of No Way Home. While Spider-Man continues to protect New York from villains, Peter Parker is increasingly withdrawn and lonely. The trailer reveals he’s only keeping up with his friends Ned and MJ through social media, which actually makes him feel worse. It’s puzzling why Peter hasn’t tried to rebuild his life after the events of No Way Home, and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series explains the reason behind his isolation.
In Spider-Man stories, being close to Peter Parker always puts you in danger. His enemies often target the people he cares about if they find out who he is. Right now, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, that danger is especially high. A powerful and unchecked task force led by Kingpin is operating with no limits. Even someone like Karen, who has helped Spider-Man, has to go into hiding just to move around New York City, showing how much risk anyone connected to a hero faces in Kingpin’s city.
It’s still unclear exactly how the stories of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the Daredevil: Born Again series will connect, but Kingpin made a clear mention of Spider-Man in the first season of Daredevil. The mayor knows about Spider-Man’s activities and wants to stop him, meaning Peter Parker is aware of Kingpin’s efforts to clean up the city. This confirms Peter’s decision to focus on being a hero rather than trying to build a personal life after the events of No Way Home. While it’s a lonely existence, Peter prefers to work alone rather than risk bringing someone like Ned or MJ into danger. He’s not only distanced himself from his friends, but hasn’t seemed to make any new connections either.
Everything connects to the core lesson Peter learns in No Way Home. Through his experiences and relentless efforts to fix his error – accidentally disrupting Doctor Strange’s spell – Peter finally grasped the true meaning of “with great power comes great responsibility” and what being a hero demands. As he explains in the Brand New Day trailer, Spider-Man sometimes has to make difficult decisions, “even if it means breaking Peter Parker’s heart.” Knowing Fisk’s forces are operating nearby, Peter understands he can’t risk getting close to anyone. If Fisk discovered someone was helping Spider-Man and harmed (or killed) them, Peter would be overwhelmed with guilt.
Why Does Peter Try to Reconnect With His Friends in the Brand New Day Trailer?

The new Daredevil: Born Again series highlights the risks faced by those who help vigilantes, which makes us rethink the Brand New Day trailer. The trailer ends with a lighthearted scene of Peter reconnecting with MJ and Ned at a housewarming party. It’s odd he’d try to rebuild these relationships while New York is supposedly being protected by Fisk’s Safer Streets Initiative. This suggests the Initiative might no longer be active when the main events of Brand New Day begin.
Fans have been speculating about potential spoilers for the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again. Some think a quick shot of Spider-Man getting a Key to the City reveals too much about the show’s ending, suggesting New York leaders will be celebrating heroes instead of pursuing them. However, a brief scene of Peter Parker with MJ in the trailer might be a bigger hint. The Key to the City moment could easily be a simple acknowledgment of Spider-Man’s past heroics, perhaps even before Fisk became mayor. What’s more telling is Peter seeking out MJ – this could mean Fisk is no longer in office, allowing Peter to feel safe enough to focus on his personal life again.
As a huge Spider-Man fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s next, and it’s interesting to consider the risks of his enemies finding out who he really is. If the story moves forward after the Kingpin’s defeat, maybe Peter wouldn’t have to worry about a task force going after his friends and family. He could be trying to get back to a time where only a few people knew his secret, and everyone else just saw Spider-Man. Honestly, while it would be a shame if it undid the ending of No Way Home, I get why Peter might want that. He’s been pretty isolated, and he really values his friendships with Ned and MJ. He just wants a chance to reconnect with them and see if they can go back to being normal friends again.
