Oh look, it’s another game I both reviewed and guided.
I mainly got the Platinum Trophy for SpongeBob Rehydrated because I earned almost all the Trophies while at work. It’s definitely a strange perk of the job sometimes!
Thankfully, the game is actually quite enjoyable. It’s a fresh take on a popular game originally released for the PlayStation 2, which I never got around to playing. Looking back, I probably should have, since I was a huge SpongeBob fan as a kid – and still am, to be honest.
Overall, the remake is pretty good in a few areas. While it’s not perfect and shows its age in places, it looks good and is still enjoyable to play.
Secondly, it serves as a strong reminder of a bygone era of licensed video games and movie tie-ins.
I remember when Battle for Bikini Bottom first came out in 2003! It feels like a different era for games based on TV shows and movies. Back then, you got so many of them, and honestly, a lot weren’t great – but they had a certain charm, you know? They weren’t trying to be perfect, and there was something fun about that.
The 2002 Spider-Man game, based on the first Sam Raimi film, comes to mind as a good example of a game that was just okay – not bad, but definitely not amazing.
When it first came out, this SpongeBob game was surprisingly good and may have been one of the first licensed games that proved tie-ins could be genuinely fun and worthwhile.
2003 also saw the release of The Simpsons: Hit & Run, a surprisingly good game based on a popular franchise – it stood out as a rare example of a successful tie-in game.
Things really took off with Spider-Man 2, the game based on the second movie. Honestly, it was amazing, and a lot of people still think it’s one of the best Spider-Man games ever created!
It’s fun for me to think back on those games – they were a big part of my childhood collection. Titles like Casper, A Bug’s Life, The Emperor’s New Groove, and The Simpsons: Road Rage weren’t amazing games, but I still have a lot of fond memories of them and a real soft spot for them.
Video game adaptations of popular franchises are often excellent these days. For example, Batman: Arkham Asylum on the PlayStation 3 is a standout title that really helped change how people viewed tie-in games, proving they could be truly great.
Marvel is releasing a new Wolverine game this year, and it’s expected to be a major hit in 2026.
I think I should definitely spend a little more time discussing SpongeBob Rehydrated. This playthrough has been the most unfocused one in the series so far.
It’s funny, of all the games I’ve completely finished, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated has the longest name! Okay, maybe that wasn’t a very interesting fact. But at least you know no future game title will be any longer, so you can stop wondering about that.
Cheers, SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom Rehydrated.
