30 Years Ago Today, Friends Wrote Out 1 of Its Best Supporting Characters (& the Actor Later Played a Different Role)

Throughout its ten seasons, Friends featured a great variety of recurring characters who added color to the main cast’s lives. Some, like Jack and Judy Geller, appeared often, but many of the most beloved characters only showed up for a few episodes. Memorable guests included Paul (Bruce Willis), Cathy (Paget Brewster), and Pete (Jon Favreau), and these memorable appearances weren’t limited to romantic interests.

A memorable short-term character was Eddie Menuek, played by Adam Goldberg. He briefly lived with Chandler after Joey moved out, appearing in just three episodes during Season 2. Despite his limited screen time, Eddie made a lasting impression with his funny lines and increasingly erratic personality.

Chandler initially attempted to make things work with Eddie, even going on a trip to Vegas together according to Eddie’s version of events. However, their issues finally exploded in the episode “The One Where Eddie Won’t Go,” ultimately leading to Eddie leaving. This episode features a particularly strong argument, with some brilliantly written lines, and really highlights Matthew Perry’s acting talent. Although the actor who played Eddie, Paul Rudd, later returned to the Friends universe in the Joey spin-off as a different character, Jimmy Costa (and Joey never seemed to notice the resemblance to Chandler’s ex-roommate!), Eddie remains the most memorable of Chandler’s girlfriends.

Eddie Served An Important Purpose In Friends

While Eddie wasn’t a romantic interest, he played a key role in strengthening the friendship between Joey and Chandler. After Chandler’s breakup, Eddie helped them both realize how important their connection was. Goldberg’s portrayal was also consistently funny, though the way his character was sometimes labeled as “crazy” might seem insensitive now. Ultimately, Eddie’s biggest contribution was prompting Joey and Chandler to acknowledge how much they relied on each other.

Throughout Friends, the friendship between Joey and Chandler was consistently a highlight. The show explored how their living situation changed when Chandler moved in with Monica, and Joey later shared the apartment with a new character, Janine. Though a romance blossomed with Janine, it ultimately reminded Joey—and the audience—of the deep importance of his friendships, which were a central theme of the series. These friendships were lifelong, and sometimes needed a gentle reminder, like from Eddie, to truly appreciate.
