Many people know about the market for collectible video games, but fewer realize that gaming consoles themselves are also highly collectible. A dedicated community collects consoles, and rare models – especially limited editions, prototypes, and custom-made systems – can be very valuable. There are countless collectible consoles, so we researched many to identify five that consistently rank as the most sought-after, based on how rare they are and their current estimated value.
1) Hot Summer Peach DS

In the summer of 2005, Nintendo Japan ran a contest called ‘Hot Summer’ with unique prizes, including a limited-edition Princess Peach Nintendo DS. Only 200 of these special DS consoles were created for the contest, making them rare and valuable collectibles. Unboxed consoles typically sell for around $8,300, but a complete package – including the box and manual – can fetch around $15,000. While they sometimes appear on eBay, finding one of these rare Hot Summer Peach DS consoles is extremely difficult due to the limited production run.
2) Shadow of the Tomb Raider Xbox One X

For National Dog Day and the launch of the game Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Microsoft and Square Enix teamed up to create a unique Xbox One X. This special console was designed to look like it came straight from the game, featuring Mayan designs, vines, and moss. It was then auctioned off for $8,300 to raise money for the Best Friends Animal Society, an organization dedicated to ending euthanasia in animal shelters.
3) The Atari Cosmos

In 1978, Atari started working on a portable gaming console called the Atari Cosmos, a remarkably inventive system for its time. It featured a typical LED screen, but with a unique addition: a holographic layer projected on top to create a more realistic 3D effect. While Atari planned to manufacture around 250 units, the project was ultimately canceled. However, nine games were created for it, making the Atari Cosmos a highly sought-after and extremely rare collectible. When one appears for sale, it usually fetches around $26,000.
4) The Nintendo PlayStation

Okay, so here’s the crazy story of how the PlayStation came to be. Basically, Sony and Nintendo were teaming up to make a CD-ROM add-on for the Super Nintendo – think of it as a way to play games on CDs instead of cartridges. But Nintendo got cold feet and bailed on the deal. They ended up going with cartridges for the Nintendo 64, and Sony, not wanting to waste all that work, decided to just make their own console – and that’s how the PlayStation was born! They actually built a working prototype, a ‘Nintendo PlayStation,’ and made around 200 of them. Now, only two are known to exist, and they’re insanely rare. One sold for $360,000 back in 2020 – a world record! PriceCharting says they’re worth around $1.6 million now, though I’m not even sure if any are still sealed in the box.
5) The Nintendo Wii Supreme

When the Nintendo Wii launched in 2006, it cost around $250. However, designer Stuart Hughes created three ultra-luxurious versions called the Nintendo Wii Supreme. These consoles are actually covered in 22-karat gold – a whopping 2,500 grams of it! They sold for around $365,000 each. In addition to the gold, the Wii Supreme also features nearly 20 karats of flawless diamonds. With raw materials alone costing around $200,000, the Wii Supreme remains the most expensive gaming console ever created, and a few have been sold since its release.
