It feels like every classic movie is getting a new version these days. From Disney favorites like The Lion King and Aladdin—and even a recent remake of Moana—to upcoming films based on Street Fighter and Resident Evil, there’s a lot of remakes and reboots coming out.
With so many remakes being released, it’s refreshing when one stands out and tries a new approach. Unlike typical shot-for-shot remakes, the new version of Anaconda takes the story in a completely different direction, and it’s currently the most popular movie on Netflix.
Anaconda Is A Clever Reboot
The new movie Anaconda is a fresh start for the series, but it stands apart from previous films. Many people remember the 1997 hit with Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, and Jon Voight, but there have been six Anaconda movies made in total, including a recent one released in 2024.
The 2025 film Anaconda is a fresh start for the series. It follows a group of friends who were big fans of the original 1997 movie and spent their childhood making films together. When one of them buys the rights to Anaconda, they travel to the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to create their own version of the story.
What really sets this new version apart is its self-awareness. A simple remake or sequel of the original snake-attack movie probably wouldn’t have gotten much attention. However, this film quickly became one of the most popular titles on Netflix when it was released.
Anaconda Pays Homage To The Original Film
I absolutely love how much the characters in this movie geek out over the original Anaconda from 1997 – it really adds to the fun! Plus, the cast is fantastic. You’ve got Paul Rudd, Jack Black, Thandiwe Newton, and Steve Zahn leading the way, and Daniela Melchior and Selton Mello are great in their supporting roles.
The actors convincingly portray people who are passionate about Anaconda, making their dedication believable. The character of Mello also has a subtly unsettling quality, reminiscent of Jon Voight’s performance in the original film.
Beyond simply being a fun movie, this version of Anaconda is a clear tribute to the original. The filmmakers did a great job recreating the look and feel of the first film, and even brought back some of the original actors for cameos. While it’s not always perfectly logical, that’s actually part of what makes it enjoyable.
Anaconda Did Well Commercially
You know, it’s funny, I was surprised to learn that Anaconda actually came out way back in late 2025 – it felt like it just appeared! But when I looked at the numbers, it clearly did well. Made on a $45 million budget, it went on to earn around $135 million at the box office, which is pretty good!
The strong viewership numbers are probably because Jack Black and Paul Rudd are well-known actors who consistently draw audiences to theaters. People were eager to see their new movie, even those who hadn’t seen the original Anaconda film from 1997.
While not a complete flop, Anaconda wasn’t a critical triumph. Reviews were mixed, giving it a 48% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics generally enjoyed the movie’s interesting idea and likeable actors, but felt the film’s inconsistent tone prevented it from fully realizing its potential.
Even though critics didn’t rate it highly, audiences really enjoyed the film, giving it a score of 75%. This shows that it can still be a fun watch for anyone looking for a good time. That makes Anaconda a great choice for a relaxed movie night on Netflix.
